Breathing problems

Does anyone have any advice regarding breathing while training?

I've herd you need to breath in through your nose and then exhale out your mouth. This will not work for me. I have to breath through my mouth the whole time. Just lately I have noticed that my breathing has become even more labored. I don't know what is happening, but I feel like I'm not taking in enough air. While swimming laps in the pool at my typical pace, I felt like I couldn't breath or get enough air. Then while running a very similar feeling, at 10 minute mile pace.

I live in FL and have been training whenever I can. Swimming is indoors and the water is relatively warm, somewhere around 80 Degrees F. I try to run after my swim and it's usually before the sun actually shinning. However, when I look at my handy dandy phone app. for weather, the humidity is hovering around 88-94 %. My bike rides are typically in the late afternoon or early evening. Usually the Heat Index is around 102-104. I don't have any issues with cramping, just breathing.

Has anyone used any of the breathing apparatuses out their on the market? I think one is called expand a lung.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Josh

Re: Using Galloway for Training but no walking at event? Any thoughts?

I used the Galloway training method for completing my first full marathon. At the time of my training my furthest running distance was 5 miles and that was when I was in high school. Now I am 37 so I had a small running training base. I would start running then I would get bored with it and then would stop, then start again. I did have somewhat of a base because of my bike riding. However, the cycling may help with some muscle groups, but running is totally different.

What I'm trying to say is that a run walk program is a good thing. I did complete my first marathon (Marine Corp. Washington D.C.) in October this year. Up to that point my longer runs, anything over 7 miles I would do the walk thing. Usually I would walk after 10 minutes of running and then walk for a minute. I truely believe that if I didn't learn to walk I would not have finished the marathon.

It did take me 5 hours and 3 minutes, but I also live in a flat state FL and there are hills in the District of Columbia.

Sorry if I've strayed, but I my personal experience is to walk if you are training that way, there is no shame in it. Your body will thank you, you probably won't be the only one walking.

Good luck!

Josh

I have had pretty good luck taking in fluids every 10 minutes or so while training in FL in the summer time. I continue with this program all year though. I've found that taking supplements from Hammer Nutrition has helped me. I don't typically drink Gatorade during a long training run or ride, the sweetness tends to upset my stomach a bit. I haven't tried the Nuun products yet, but plan to soon.

Good luck!!

Josh

Doesn't matter if I'm walking, sitting, running or riding. I thought that it was a bought with Sciatica at first, but that area hasn't been painful lately. I took almost 8 weeks off from any training to allow that to heal, and it has. Now it's in the lower right side of back back and the right Hamstring muscles.

Thanks for you thoughts.

Josh

I have had issues with my R hamstrings, which seemed to get better as I stretched and iced more. I then began to have a problem in my glute on the right side (Sciatica?) With some advice from an athletic trainer at a hospital / gym, I have taken almost 8 weeks off from any type of training. I've even began seeing a message therapist once a week. At this point the glute feels better now it's lower back and Hamstring again, (Midway down the leg and in the body of the muscle).

I've considered seeing a chiropracter, maybe I'm out of alignment, never been to one. I prefer to do my cycling in the early to late afternoon depending on the day light. I feel that in the morning after my runs I'm fresh and ready to take on the challenges of the day. I also think that with my job , if I don't get my run in early I won't do it later in the day. So for me it's early morning runs, late afternoons for my ride or swim.

Hamstring Tendinitis

I'm back with another question. Thanks to all of those that gave me advice regarding my soreness and stiffness in the morning. My new ailment is my right hamstring. I've noticed a painful area towards the bottom of the hamstring muscles of my right leg. It's located on the back of the knee area towards the medial side, just above the actual joint. It is painful most of the time, but a lot more painful after riding or running. It even hurts to the touch. The spot feels as if it is a tendon, approx. 3-4 inches in length (from the knee towards the thickness of the hamstring muscles) It feels fibrous too. After a run or bike if I just touch it, it's painful. I thought initially that it was a hamstring strain. I stretched it a lot, before and after workouts, bought a roller massager and used it to try to make it release, has not worked, extremely painful when rolling over this area. I have been running, biking, and swimming in an effort to compete in a Sprint Tri.

Could this be a form of Tendinitis? What can I do to make it better? Therapy? What exercises? Ice? Rest?

Any advice is appreciated

Maybe beginning with a good warm up then getting into it. Ride as hard as you can for a minute, then spin for a minute and so on. Complete sets of say 5, 1 minute intervals in the beggining. Over time increase your intervals to 5 minutes with a minute recovery. This should increase your speed and you ability to push yourself reaching a higher exertion level and maintaining a higher heart rate.

Good Luck!
