I did the 5k, and it was the worst, most poorly coordinated event I have ever done. The announcer did not say anything about people lining up by start times, so I spent the first quarter-mile or so fighting my way through all of the walkers and slow people who lined up at the front for some reason. The chip timing was way off. My stopwatch and ipod app both say I finished in under 32 minutes, but my "official time" was 33:13. So 2 weeks ago I ran a much hillier course in 32:11, but a completely flat one took me over 33 minutes? It's ridiculous! Only thing I can figure is that there were so many people it took over a minute to get everyone through the starting gate, and they must have started everyone's time when the whistle blew, regardless of when they actually crossed the starting line. Also, the only giveaway was the t-shirt, which was nice, but nothing else. At least the 1/2 marathon people got medals. There was not enough parking at the after party. I had to park 3 blocks away. We had to stand in line for 30 minutes to get into Seacrets. The free drink coupons they gave us were only good for beer, which I don't drink, and there was not enough food for everybody. I would stand in line at the buffet, and by the time I got up there all the trays were empty. Definitely would not do this one again.

Re: Why is the jump from week 3 to week 4 so large?

Hi Jim,

I wondered the same thing myself until I actually got out there and did week 4, and found it actually wasn't that bad. The important thing to remember is that the C25K program is a guide and it is important to listen to your body and go at your own pace. If the jump from week 3 to week 4 is too big, find some middle ground. I think you should try week 4 first though. You might be surprised by how well you do.

If you do the math on the distance vs time versions of the program, you see that if you follow the time directions you end up running a larger portion of the workout than if you follow the distance directions. The first time I did the program, I did each week twice, the first time I would go to a local track and follow the distance directions, then the next week I would do the time directions. This made the transition from week-to-week and the program overall much more gradual and effective for me.

Good luck,

Jay

Hey All!

I am 33, 5'7" and right around 200 lbs. My goal is less about weight loss and more about body fat. I am about 30% right now and would like to get down to about 12-15%. I also want to be able to run a 5k in under 19 minutes, but I know I have a loooong way to go. I have always loved running, but never did it consistently. Either I would push myself too hard and get injured, or things would get busy and I would stop doing it. That is why the C25K program is so great! The workouts are only 20-30 minutes 3 days per week, and they are gradual enough that I finish them feeling great instead of worn out. I actually have so much energy lately that I have to force myself to take days off in between my runs.

I did barefoot running in high school when I was doing competitive Tae Kwon Do, and the coach made us run barefoot to toughen up the bottoms of our feet. Aside from the gross calluses on my feet that I can't get rid of, I think barefoot running is a good idea, I'm just paranoid about stepping on glass or something. I'll probably give it another try one of these days at the track.

Making my second attempt at C25K. Tried back in April and had to drop out after 2 weeks because of an ankle injury. I just started week 5 yesterday, and I felt so juiced when I got home from my run, that I went and did something crazy. I registered for the Marine Corps 10k on October 31. My plan is to finish C25K, and then go back and do weeks 3-9 again doubling all of the times/distances so that by October 23 I will be up to 6 miles. If anybody has any tips or advice I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

James
