Ok, here's an update. I've found that I can't really stand the trainer - riding indoors really is boring even in front of the TV. I sold my trainer and bought all my winter gear so I could ride in almost any temps. In 2 months I've been on the trainer 3 times. I've been out 3 times this week and will get another ride in Sunday. Performance has a good selection of cold weather and layering has worked for me. The only additional thing I will probably get are full booties and a full face mask - other than that it has been great. So, unless you live where there is too much snow or ice I would say go for the cold weather gear and skip the trainer. Anyways, that's my 2 cents worth.

I would say for that price the best bet I've found is on bikesdirect.com. Here in Dallas we have a Cycle Spectrum that is owned by Bikes Direct so I could actually see and ride a few of the bikes they offer. Pretty much hands down they sell bikes with groupos that no one can touch. You can find a few entry level bikes in your price range no problem there. Since you're new to the sport, you can always take it to a local bike shop and have them complete the assembly and tune up the bike for pretty cheap and you'll be on your way.

Then just ride, ride, ride. I've been riding on and off for a couple years but about 4 months ago decided to do it more consistently and now I'm hooked. Joined a local bike club and love riding with all kinds of different people in different places. It's a great way to get in shape and meet people and have fun.

First, what is your budget? Can't really give suggestions if we don't know what you can afford to spend.

I've been shopping around for a few months and have ridden everything out there in my price range ($1000). Right now I am still riding a Jamis mountain bike I got a little over a year ago for like $250. Then I put road slicks on it and that really helps on the road.

I can tell you that Performance Bikes will be having a great great sale the weekend after Thanksgiving...like 20% off!!!

Depending on your budget, I'd be happy to tell you the best stuff I've found and have considered.

I like a Fluid trainer - just bought one at performance bicycles. Also has an adjustable tension lever for I think 5 settings. Pretty quiet. And reviews on it said it was reliable and would last a few seasons.

It's a Travel Trac Century V. Highly recommend.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments. Seems I've got to put my bike plans on hold - but will start looking & shopping again probably after the cold season. Until then I've just bought a trainer and put road slicks on my MTB and will wear that out until maybe March. Thanks again.

Feedback on Scattante Road bikes

Have been riding and comparing bikes for weeks now and I am leaning towards a Scattante CFR Sport. It has Tiagra shifters but then 105 all around. Carbon frame. As I understand it's Performance Bikes inhouse brand but is now made by Fuji. With my club discounts I can get this bike for right at $1000, plus they give me $100 (or 10%) in points to use for purchases...so that's another $100 back basically.

Anyone have any feedback on these bikes?

Any advice would be great.

Anyone Familiar w/Orbea Road Bikes

Considering an Orbea Gavia road bike for my 1st road bike. Got one I can get for $1200 at a LBS. Alum frame w/Carbon fork and 105 all around. I'm just not familiar w/the brand. Any one have any experience or feedback on this brand?

Thanks everyone for your feedback...I'm a couple days from making a decision and would like opinions...I didn't just jump out and buy the Motobecane Sprint. Instead I've visited about every bike store in the Dallas Metroplex and want to see if anyone can shed some light on these comparisons:

1. Motobecane Sprint - carbon stay with Ultegra all the way around $995

2. Orbea Gavia (not real familiar w/the brand myself) - Aluminum w/carbon fork. Shimano 105 all around except Rear Derailleur whic is Ultegra. Zeus pro brakes 2010 model - discounted to $1200 (at LBS where I bought my Jamis MTB)

3. Giant Defy 2 Compact - $1150 - Tiagra all around.

Any opinions on which direction anyone might lean. The Orbea was discounted $150 because I'm a repeat customer plus I get 15% off all accessories I buy. The Giant is at a LBS new to me but the guy was really nice and we talked for like an hour. The Motobecane store here in Dallas is probably not where I'd go later for service - a bit far from me.

Any advice would be great.
