Occasionally spread the pb on a piece of whole wheat bread like before a long run. I also like a 1/2 cup oatmeal with a scoop of pb and blueberries. When I first started I uses to run out the door with nothing in the tank but a glass of water and would fill famished by 2 or so miles, so would defiantly recommend something. I figure the banana is a great way to throw upthe potassium levels before I start depleting them. Have never done the shake thing so I have nothing to compare that to. To find what works for you just try difrent combinations of healthy foods till you find one that works for you. Btw watch out for those bars, a lot of them are loaded with sugars. This week on my long run I threw some frosted mini wheats in the pocket of my hydration vest and they where a nice treat after a couple miles. Good luck and don't give up.

I have been running about 2 years over 260+ but loosing, and I have some of the nicest legs and tightest butt I've ever seen. My wife thinks so too. Unfortunately the thighs and butt still have some fat on them you can still feel the definition. My calves on the other hand the definition when I walk is like an athlete of 180lb. I have done minimal other training to my legs so all this definition has to have come from the running. Can't wait till I get some more fat off to be able to better see my thigh definition. Also congrats on the victory over the vending machine.

I have been a runner for over about 2 years now and wouldn't dream of not wearing a pair of compression shorts under my running shorts (I cut the under wear out of the running shorts). I have lost about 200 lbs and I find that they do a great job of keeping every thing where it should be. They also eliminate chapping and discomfort. My compression shorts are a little longer then the running shorts, but you really can't tell to bad till the running shorts start to ride up. At that point quite frankly I would be way more embarrassed not wearing the compression shorts then the fact that I'm wearing two pairs of shorts. Last year I was waiting to run a half and I watched a little runner girl "putting her self together" it involved all sorts of tape and anti chaffing (deodorant stick looking thing) stuff, and I don't think her routine was any crazier then my two pairs of shorts. I feel the most important thing is comfort, and some semblance of modesty.

My personal victory so far is going from 450+ down to my current stealthy 268, an training for my first full I completed the half last year. I found you can't buy it if there is no money in your pockets. I always leave change and cash less the a 10 (can't put 10's in a vending machine). Also if I happen to get change or small bills through out the day leave it in the car, atleast I have to think about it on the way to go get it. Drinking a large glass of water is a great way to back of hunger, and having your own pre measured healthy snacks lying around is invaluable in slaying the vending beast. I find in everything I do having a predetermined contingency plan is always better then just winging it. So know what your going to do before you get to work, have your weapons ready and fight that beast. Also don't beat yourself up on an occasional lost battle, they won't scar you for life.

Stretching is an entirely diffrent exercise that should be done to keep your flexibility as you age, but prior to running can actually lead to injury. Try just doing a warm up walk to just show your body what it is you are about do. Save the stretching for bed time. I find it relaxing.

who922 I have been running over a year now, completed my first half marathon in Nov, and started thinking about triathalons becouse I love to ride as well as run. I completed my first Tri last month and thought I would share some of my opinions and experiance. First of I say if you can ride more then 12 miles, and run the run 4 miles then go for it. remember as big guys we arent going to win so take your time in the final run and cross the finish line. The transition from run to bike should be no problem, however going from bike back to run is nasty. The first time I did that for practice I thought I was running on someone elses legs. I would do this atleast once before the race if you can just to get the idea of what it feels like. Some advice that i learned if in that transition area you take your time, stretch your muscels a little you will find it easier, after all like I said your not going to win anyway so have fun. Sorry for the spelling and grammer for some reason this thing is not letting me edit.
