I'm running both the Chicago and Detroit Marathons - need advice about where to stay in Detroit on a budget.

Hey everyone!

This fall I'm planning my tour of two marathons I've never done in cities I've never even been to: Chicago (on October 11th) and Detroit (which I haven't signed up for yet on October 18th). I'm doing this on a week's vacation, so I'm also on a strict budget. If I do the Chicago Marathon, I will likely make a week out of it and either stay in Chicago or Detroit/Windsor until the 18th (and then head back to Duluth, MN)...seeing that I have pretty much no money...I am planning now! So, if you are familiar with these events - what can I do in terms of lodging and getting around without a car?

I found a hostel in Chicago - that should be fine for the night - however, does anyone know of a place in Detroit or Windsor that is SAFE, inexpensive, near a gym, and would generally be a fun experience for the following week? I am doing this alone so really I don't need anything grand in terms of space - I've roughed it at the 'dorm' type rooms at the Y before. So to me it's more important that I am just able to be a part of both marathons than anything else. I live in Duluth so I know everything about jacked up hotel rates during the week of marathons! (except for the dorms at the University of Minnesota - Duluth but those have to be reserved months in advance).

My name is Jon and I'd love to talk with you more if you know of any resources or places I can look into. I'm doing some of my own searches online, but in my experience it's always proven that local opinions are much better than the photos they show you online of these hostels/hotels/dorms. Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you!

Jon in Duluth

jonathanlund@me.com

MINNESOTA: Help! I need a canoeist for the Lake Minnetonka 5 mile swim (7/18/09)

Okay - I realize this is a LONG SHOT but I figured I would try. I am interested in swimming the 'Minnetonka Challenge' which is a 5 mile swim race held at Lake Minnetonka on Saturday, July 18, 2009. Here is the website http://www.minnesotamasters.com/meetinfo/2009/2009%20Minnetonka%20Challenge%20Registration.pdf

Anyways, to make a long story short, in order for me to get into the event, I need someone to canoe alongside me - I don't know anyone who even canoes or kayaks! I don't have much in terms of finances so I am looking for someone who purely is looking for some time to get out and canoe (with me swimming alongside). I won't drown; it's just a requirement to be in the race. You aren't responsible for anything. If you are interested, or know anyone who is, PLEASE get in touch with me - the deadline is approaching and I live in Duluth, so I need to get moving on this fast. THANKS and if you know any avid canoeists/kayakers please pass this on!

Jonathan Lund

218-355-1296
