Re: Long Beach 10k, 5k, 1 Mile Pajama Run/Walk Reviews

Beautiful location and running along the beach was a nice change from other road races. BUT....and here is the big issue. Poorly organized for such a large turn out. I never got a shirt and I picked up my packet early. Those who came to pick up their packet the day of had to wait in a line that didn't move. The area where the bibs were to be picked up was too small and allowed the line to spill into the street where runners were being yelled at to move. There was a parking lot behind the race start that was mostly open. Why couldn't the vendors step up there and allow for more room for the people to browse and get their bibs. Also, WHY in the world were the vendors parked in the start area!?!? And with signs saying "NO PARKING!" Come on!! 15 minutes before the race there was an announcement to move the cars but with all the people waiting to start, the cars had to wiggle their way out. And don't get me started on the start of the race. That was pathetic. No race should ever start late. Those who were still getting bibs should have just been allowed to start late. And why wasn't the city posted with signs of a race the week of so that people knew to avoid the path!? There were lots of bike riders, strollers and early beach goers frustrated that they were pushed off the path. So many things to improve before another race.

Re: 3rd Annual Beechwood 5k - The Mad Dash Reviews

First let me say thanks to Beechwood and all it's families that hosted and volunteered to put this event on. I was happy to have a race in my hometown and a trail race at that. So thank you.

I loved the trail for the 5k. The booths and breakfast offered were wonderful. And tee-shirts are great.

I do have some suggestions to improve the event. First, ropes. Rope off the course with rope, not tape, spaced out cones or streamers. Whatever was used was ineffective in marking the course for both the runners and spectators. String rope from posts make a continuous course route that is visible and easy to follow.

Secondly, and most importantly, when the race reconvenes at the entrance to the trail and the last mile veers off to the right while the start/finish line is off to the left, a large (I mean LARGE) sign that points to the right for the last mile and left for the finish would be helpful. I was a runner that didn't know the route and made a left unknowingly and did not get to run the full 5k. As a competitive runner, receiving an invalid time slip due to this mix-up was frustrating and infuriating. I was running the competitive timed race and was looking forward to having my time recorded only to be misdirected to the finish line too soon.

And lastly, my son ran the 1k. The warm up was fun and overall the race was nice but the course, due to its snaking back to the finish/start line, was confusing and a jumble of kids running in every which way. Again, roping off the course rather than cones spread out to mark the course would be a great option for future races.

I thank you all again for hosting. We did enjoy the environment shared by all the Beechwood families.

Race day had enough parking and a wonderful beginning stretch for everyone. Was impressed to see markers for pace times at the beginning to help organize the runners. That was something I've yet to see at another race and I liked it, made it easy to find a place with other runners who will not slow you down or run you over. The finish line was a little over crowded and hard to navigate. Ended up just grabbing water and leaving without taking advantage of the food and booths there. Would have like that part to have been easier to navigate so that I could have participated in the end of race frivolities. Otherwise, a great race. Will run it again next year.

All your stories and successes and sharing has really given me some food for thought and confidence. This weekend is race #2 and I'm a mixture of nerves and excitement. I know I've gained in strength so I can't wait to see my finish time. I'm scheduled out to April for now. Just keeping my ear to the ground around me to find my future races.
