Training with kids

So my 6 year old has expressed an intrest in running and compleated her first 1k this weekend (6:30). She wants to do a 5k next spring and she is already to run 2k in practice without stopping (she couold have gone further but I cut her off at 2). My main concern though is over training her. I'm afraid that she will push herself to far and get injured. I'm going to limit her to the 10% rule, but I would love some suggestions to make sure that she trains smart and does not get injured.

Running in smoke

It's got to the point that somedays visibility starts to get hazy at about a half mile. I don't have indoor running as an option, but don't know if I want to keep training out in the smoke. Any suggestions?

Dress Code for Runners in Races?

Good question. Simple, but the answer not so much. The problem is that it all comes back to the moral decay of our culture. What most of us consider "normal" race attire would have been considered risque 30 years ago. That and popular culture says to show off your body and let everyone see it. The sad thing is that if a race sponsor would just make a statement as simple as "please refrain from wearing immodest attire" then 95% of the problem would disappear. The problem is that they are afraid of offending the 5% that don't care what everyone else thinks. If we want to see the attire change back to the more modest styles then it's going to have to start with us runners setting the example and speaking out against those you must think that their body's are God's gift to the world.

Is it possible to stay/get in marathon shape running 1 X wk, plus X-training ?

You might be able to, but the problem is that to become a better runner you have to run. No amount of cross training can fix that for you. That being said you might be able to get away with cross training during the week with a long run (for marathon shape 20+ miles) on the weekend. Just remember that if you are biking you need to still push the limits a bit and go for just as long as you would have ran because even though you use your legs it's not the same muscles and it's not in the same order as when you run so you want to make sure the cardio is worked on for the same amount of time.

After my last marathon I got a simple bug that just gave everyone else in the family a fever for a day (except the 6 year old that never even got sick), but put me down with a fever and sore throat for 3 days. Make sure you keep the immune system boosts (vit c,e,a , hydration, rest) up for a week or two after the marathon. Your body is going to recover from the marathon the same way it would as if you had surgery.

Joining Track Senior Year?

I'm willing to be only a handful of us have ever taken first place in any major races. If you want to run track then go for it, but don't get to caught up in the winning part of it. Run for fun and the speed will follow.

And don't think your height means you can't be a good distance runner. Most of the female endurance runners I know are about 5'10 and a few also break the 6 ft mark. Remember that running is about heart not body size.

They are not the worst things you could be catching. If you catch a computer mouse sized rock you could sprain or snap your ankle and they are a lot harder to see then the rings.

Running with Ankle or Wrist Weights

It was the worst choice I made. It messed up my knees for about a month after and I still have to be extra careful with them. I've have a friend who would always run with a 15lb pack. He is now looking at knee surgery and the doctor told him that the extra weight is exactly what caused it. If you want a more strenuous workout then find a hill. The longer the pull, or (my favorite) the steeper the pull the better the workout.

If you can comfortably run a good long run (20+) a month after and keep close to goal pace then go for it. If you feel like you still need more time to recover then you might want to wait a bit longer.
