Advice on if I am ready to do an ULTRA?

I am considering doing an Ultra (53 mile) but I am not sure if I am ready for it. I am currently training for a Half Iron this year so I don't run everyday, but I am logging one long run a week that is typically between 17-19 miles depending on the course. During the week I also log a couple hours in the pool and 4-5 hours on the bike in addition to the 4-5 hours of running I get in. Oh, and I also lift twice a week.

My long runs have been going since July of last year and I typically run long 3 weekends in a row and than only do a 10 miler on my rest week. You should also consider that all my running to date has been done on roads and the Ultra I am considering is mostly trail based. I have been focusing on hills in my running (although nothing like the hills that are in the Ultra).

I have no consideration for time... I just want to be able to do the whole Ultra with my head held high. The question is... can I survive it? Or do I need to wait until my TRI is over and then just focus on running for a year to prepare for an Ultra?

The Ultra I am considering is the Vermont Pittsfield Peaks Ultra Challenge ... www.peakraces.com

Any experiences/suggestions that you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Do not weigh yourself

I disagree... You should weigh yourself every day and at the same time. Then chart it using Microsoft Excel and make notes each day of changes to diet, exercise routine, stress at home and work, etc. Over time you will be able to see triggers to weight gain/loss and then execute on those triggers. I personally think weighing yourself every morning after you get out of bed and excrete, gives you the most consistent weight chart. Some people use www.fitday.com as it will allow them to chart weight, calories taken in, and calories burned... I just wish that it would allow you to enter a journal notes as to events that happened that day.

If you weigh everyday... you need to be objective. Understand that most execise programs take weeks if not months to show results. Shoot for a pound to a pound and a half of weight loss a week. Anything more than that is unsustainable and you will flip flop and put it back on at a later point. And yes... it is very common to gain weight on different days of the week based on your workout schedule and where key muscle building exercises come into play. You will also find that fluid intake has a dramatic impact on your weight... if you exercise long and hard and dont get enough fluid replacement, your weight will drop the next day and then skyrocket back up the next day after your body absorbs the lost fluid. Some coaches will tell you to weigh yourself before a workout and then again after and consume the weight difference in water over the next few hours to make sure you are replacing what you burned.
