But that is overkill for a 5K. Remember, you long run has to be supported by your weekly mileage.

I coached someone once who ran some pretty decent times in high school. Her longest run was 10 miles. But, she ran it as fast as 65 minutes while she was still in high school. When she was in college, she and one of her friends ran 12 1/2 miles once a week during the summer at 6:20 to 6:40 pace. So you can see the long run was not a day off like your 17 mile run. She also didn't do high mileage and maxed out at 50 miles a week.

How did you feel when running the next day? How long have you been running 5 miles after practice? Are you training for distance events?

Without knowing anything about you, it is impossible for anyone to give you advice. Your decision to run 5 miles after practice should be based on your rate of recovery. If you felt fine the day after your 400s, then you probably only need to eliminate the 5 mile run on the day before your meet.

quote:

Originally posted by RunningWorm:

Points to ponder: You have to have a strategy that is multi-dimensional. If your plan is to beat one person and they have a bad day, you won't beat the other runners who are not in your plan. So, you have to have variables in your plan. When someone is inconsistent, you don't know if they are having a good day or simply started too quickly, so your plan has to take into consideration the way you feel. If the person who finished 10 seconds in front of you runs in the 22s on a flat course, you should expect to run that fast or maybe faster as a flat course is also going to help you. You have to have a strategy that is multi-dimensional. If your plan is to beat one person and they have a bad day, you won't beat other runners who are not in your plan.

The stategy to "Go Nuts" is fine as long as it is controlled and in the second half of the race. Go over your last race. At what point did you pick up the pace. Could you have picked it up sooner and still run the last mile well?

My daughter was a pretty good runner and in first indoor race in her junior year, she was "outkicked" by an open runner in the last 200 meters of a 3000m. It surprised her because she had "outkicked" the person who beat her in a road race when she was in high school. When she came home, we spent 3 hours talking about all things she could have done to prevent being beaten by someone at the end of a race. The conversation came in handy a month later in a dual meet at Princeton. She was running the 3000 against 3 women who had beaten her in cross country. She ran in second place for the first mile. When the leader started to fade, another Princeton runner moved into the lead; my daughter followed her. With about 800 meters left, my daughter picked up the pace and took the lead and increased the pace. Each lap she picked up the pace again, running the last quarter in 71 seconds. She won by a lot. After the race she told me that he had to talk to herself to keep from taking the lead saying "behave yourself, stay where you are". So after a mile itno the race, she was relaxed and could run the second half faster than the first half. When she took the lead, she got into a rhythm and could keep increasing the pace by having complete control of her upper body. So, at the point where you decide to pick up the pace, make sure that your upper body is in control and get into a rhythm that is comfortable, but faster. From that point to the finish, your race will get easier; particularly as you pass runners.
