Hi Painting Lady, I'm just starting the Jeff Galloway program, and my plan is to only add the walking breaks on my LSD days. I still want to be able to run a 10K w/o walking, to stay prepared for shorter-than-marathon events. You asked how you decide when you will start incorporating the r/w intervals, and I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean in any one run, or in your overall training program? Actually the answer to both is immediately.

According to JG, you should take a walking break in your first 5 min, or first mile. Then take them approximately every mile, or less, for the duration of the run. The walking breaks can be 30 seconds, a minute, or longer, depending on what you need. He maintains that it will conserve your strength so that you don't lose speed at the end of the run, and often increases your overall time. He also says that your first walk break is the most important, the 2nd is the 2nd most important, etc. and the mistake that many people make is waiting too long to take their first one--simply because they're not tired yet. Anyway, I'm giving it a try.

Hello, I'm new to this forum but have been running for just over 2 years now. Mid-50s (female), with 5-1/2 grandchildren. I never did the C25K, because I was well into running before I heard of it. My history:

1 5K

4 10Ks

Hood-to-Coast twice, and am captaining a team again for 2011

2 unofficial half marathons

Training for marathon in June

I'm one week into my marathon training schedule and am already feeling overwhelmed. Have to run 11 miles tomorrow, and adding a mile approximately every other week until I hit 26. I've started using the Jeff Galloway program with walking breaks, and think this is the only way I'll ever be able to do a marathon.

For over a year, I refused to consider trying a marathon, but then decided the idea wasn't going to leave me alone, so I'm getting it over with. But it's SCARY, especially at my age.

So I'm here looking for encouragement and to mingle with fellow kindred spirits.

BTW, I LOVE running! It has been the most fun thing I have ever done. I wish I'd started sooner, but am SO grateful to be running at all! I look forward to many more years of pounding the pavement.
