It's not a highly useful site but it is an amusement. The WMA age grading is quite useful though. It places your performances relative to others of the same sex and age. Diminished performance with age is inevitable so at some point we don't really want to know how we stack up against the 20-somethings.

Re: Why do I weigh so heavy

Yes, way! It's absolutely due to more muscle mass. The muscles primarily used for running are the largest ones in the body. The glutes, hams and quads comprise a major percentage of your mass. So when you tone them up you can get heavier but you do look better. I sat in on many weight watchers meetings where the leaders would spout off dumb platitudes like, "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels." at which I recoiled. I don't want to be thin. I want to be fit. Fit and healthy beats the pants off of thin any day because thin can be unhealthy sometimes.

From the first of this year I went from doing maybe 10 pushups to 5 sets of 40. I went from running a 10 to 12 minute mile to 8 flat. I have not dropped more than a couple pounds but I'm leaner and fitter everywhere. People are always asking me if I lost weight. I tell them no, I just redistributed it.

Age, Weight, Sex handicap calculator

Here's an interesting web site that attempts to compute a handicap time for heavier runners.

http://academic.udayton.edu/PaulVanderburgh/weight_age_grading_calculator.htm

There are dozens of age grading calculators on the net but this is one that tries to work in an equivalence for weight. I plugged in my latest 5K, 27:29 which doesn't sound too impressive on the surface, but when I include age 61 and wt 202 lbs, it gives me a 19:53. File it under "in your dreams", but it's a fun exercise.

Try this one for plain age grading, excluding any consideration of weight, based on the world record for each age. It brings you down to earth a bit but still a very good tool to see where you sit in the global scheme of things.

http://www.heartbreakhill.org/age_graded.htm

I ran a 5k this morning, start time 9 AM. All I had was a banana and cup of tea at 6 AM and then a coffee about an hour before race time. I will occasionally stop for a coffee during a long run, walk along as I drink it and then continue on running several more miles.

But to have proper balance, get all the info you can on the weight watchers latest program or go join for a few weeks. Their points system keeps you inside the caloric window with extra pts allowances for exercise. A point is about 50 calories. Beyond that, the rest of the program is about getting in your fruits and veggies and leans more toward protein vs carbs. They have a list called filling foods which are high fiber, unrefined carbs or high in protein. I had a valve defect from an early age that eventually needed to be replaced, but was always fit and was running for decades before valve replacement. I'm more a fan of track & field than marathon distances, never had the desire to do one. I'm also a shot putter, BTW. This summer alone, since the end of May I have done 18 events at 8 T&F meets plus two 5Ks and one 8 miler. I have another meet Tuesday night and two 5Ks next week, one on roads and one European style XC. That means rocks, logs, water crossings, etc.. My biggest race each year is 15k or 10 miles.

At 61 I'm not fast, just prolific.
