Re: Kring & Chung Newport Beach Triathlon Reviews

I have done this event twice now and I do like the race. Yes you do run through a trailor park and yes the water is suspect, but the bike ride is nice except for the several U-turns, and the volunteers seem enjoyable. However, it is way too expensive. This is more than double what I have found for other triathlons. THEN, to top it off, you have to pay $10 for parking! Not for good parking, the ONLY parking around. Money is just money, but there is a principle here. I would have also liked some kind of mechanic around before the race. My zipper broke on my wetsuit 20 minutes before the race and no one around could help me. I know most races have some station with some tools. That would have been helpful. Overall all I like the course, plus it is close to home so I will probably do it every year, unless I find another one just as close for a lot cheaper.

If you can afford it, get tri shorts and a tri top or a tri suit. If you can't, I would wear speedos (I prefer the long shorts) underneath and have a LOOSE shirt waiting a T1. Just pull the wetsuit off and go. Just remember you'll be wet, so if you plan on putting anything on other than shoes, practice, and practice wet. I got my wet arm caught in my sleeve and had to have a friend pull my shirt down. It was a mess!

Terrence

www.bigdayceremonies.com

Speaking as a beginner myself, can I just say either wear a tri shirt underneath or have a loose athletic shirt at T1. Being a beginner, you're already worried about looking like a poser, nothing makes you look more like a poser then getting your wet arm caught in your darn bike jersey. My friend and I both found that out the hard way. Luckily we finished the swim about 20 seconds a part so we were able to help each other pull the wet shirts down our backs. Can you imagine? What a couple of dopes! Hey maybe a minute difference doesn't mean the difference of 1st or 10 place, but that is the beauty of endurance sports, you always want to do as best as YOU can. The second I was done racing I looked back at every mistake I made and wished I had done it differently. Getting my arm stuck in my shirt, was by far my largest regret. Change as few clothes as possible!

Terrence

www.bigdayceremonies.com

Re: Need some advice regarding wetsuits

Hey Steve,

I can't really say I'm an expert, but I talk about Triathlons all the time. I would suggest you rent one first. That is what I did. Like you said there are too many options. I had never put on a wetsuit in my life so I just rented one. I found a place for $40 but I know generally they rent for about $60. You can try onetri.com. I know most places count your rental fee toward the price of your purchase so you really wont be losing any money by renting. When I rented I went with a sleeveless, the water was about 62F and I was FREEZING! I'm doing my second tri in a month and I'm definitely going with sleeves! I hope this helps a little.

Terrence

www.bigdayceremonies.com
