Jen, some people are clueless. We all have priorities in our lives, and we arrange our training to fit our priorities. I think I know how you feel. I've been going to this spin class at the gym on Saturday's, keep in mind my long runs are usually on Sunday. One of the instructors pushes the class harder than the other instructor. We'll be just into the first few minutes of the class and she is already yelling for everyone to push harder with max effort. In the back of my mind I'm thinking I'm here for the cross training and not to jeopardize my Sunday run. So at times I might appear to be loafing when in fact I'm holding back because my priority is Sunday's run. While for the majority of the class this will be their solo workout for the entire weekend. And there are folks in the class who are good spinners and are more focused on spinning. So act like a duck and let the BS roll right off you.

Katrina, just make sure you don't go out too fast and most importantly have fun.

I have a hard time watching the time. I have a harder time running if I'm concentrating on the time than if I just run until I can't anymore. I didn't realize I needed to take days off in between, would it be ok to walk with no running. I think I will add some strength training too. I'm 43 and have never run in my life so it is certainly an adventure.

Yes, if you want to exercise on your non running days, walking or any low impact exercise such as elliptical machines, stationary bikes, swimming is good and will improve your fitness level.

This program called C25K is a popular program for those beginning to run. It is 3 days/week combining walking and running. At the end of 5 weeks you should be able to run 2 miles nonstop, and at the end of 9 weeks run 3 miles nonstop. You may find your fitness level is beyond Week 1 since this program assumes no prior exercise, if so you can start at Week 2.

For many people a key ingredient of success is to be able to work the time into their daily schedules. For you it sounds like you walk on a regular basis so incorporating running into your regime shouldn't be such a big deal. Good luck.
