Still Around

Hey there,

Work has been kicking my butt with 60 hours per week for the last few weeks and my running has suffered. For awhile, I was only getting out once per week, on weekends, but I'm trying to step things up again. Friday I did two miles in the pouring rain, I even got hit by a wave from an overhead road. Still, I'd rather have that than some of the ice and snow that most of you report. I'll take the Seattle rain, thank you very much.

Sunday I went and got fitted for my first real running shoes. At the store was also the first time I've ever run on a treadmill. Weird with the ground moving and the bouncing and the number and buttons. After that, Team Stubborn headed to a local lake and did 3.25 miles, all the way around and a little more. We took a walk (and a potty) break, but still managed to do it in 44 minutes.

My partner decided that she wants to train for a half marathon and showed me the training plan she found in Runners World. It looks a little ambitious for me, but I told her that I'd try to do as much of it with her that I can, no promises. Fortunately, the plan starts with what is our normal after work run, about a half hour, so we did that this evening. So yeah, three runs in four days.

Shell

Hey All,

I graduated C25K and my partner and I decided to move on to One Hour Runner, so here I am.

After a couple of weeks of traveling I'm back and running. First to New Englad for my sister's wedding. We didn't run there, too much going on with all the wedding plans and general family stuff. The one thing I need to note is the food. As a general rule, my family doesn't eat vegetables. It was just strange. They eat tons of prepared (like hot pockets and hot dogs) and can after can of Coke, but no veggies. When I saw them eat salad, it was soaked in oil and vinegar. I'm not kidding. Imagine so much oil that your fork slides off the lettuce instead of piercing it. Now, I appreciate a soda now and then, but we're talking more like 4-5 cans per day and they think I'm strange for drinnking water and seeking out veggies. So glad I moved away from all that. As much as I can get down on myself about weight sometimes, I can't imagine what I would be like if I lived there and ate like those folks.

Then Team Stubborn went tropical for a little bit and it was interesting to go from running in 40 degrees, wind, and Seattle drizzle to 90 degrees and 100% humidity after sunset in Mexico. We only did 20 minutes, but I looked like someone dumped a bucket of water on me at the end. We could have gone to the hotel's gym and used the treadmill, but we always run outside normally. By the way, if anyone is looking for a really good all inclusive in Mexico, I highly recommend the Riu Palace Maya Riviera in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, just outside Cancun. Great food, tons of local fresh fruit, beautiful beach, live music in the evenings, and exceptionally attentive staff. We got a great deal on Expedia.

The only glitch is that my back went out the last day in Mexico. I've had sciatica issues for around 15 years, so it wasn't a great surprise or anything, but it did throw a damper on the last day there. More importantly, it's hard to imagine running when getting out of bed requires planning, patience, and a decent pain threshhold. We gave it a couple of days, still having the getting out of bed problems, but I could walk mostly freely once I warmed up, when my partner convinced me to try running last night. I'd had back tightness before that running helped, but this is a different story and I was downright scared, but I agreed to try. At first I was super nervous, but the back didn't start spasming and there was no monsterous leg weakness, so we kept going. In my head I thought maybe doing 5 min and then walking a bit before running again, but it didn't work out that way. Instead we did a slow, 30-ish minute 2.1 mile run without stopping. I still can believe it considering some of the symptoms I was having. This morning I still had a hard time getting out of bed, but it was better than yesterday. Go Team Stubborn!

Shell

I haven't been struggling with my breathing like I have for the past three weeks and though there were some muscles that felt achy, there wasn't anything that made me want to stop. My brain also seemed to stop focusing on the experience and instead just kind of lose itself. I liked that.

Tonight I fly out to the East Coast for my sister's wedding, then my real vacation in Mexico for a week. Bringing my running stuff to Mexico, and if all works out, it looks like my partner and I will start the One Hour Runner program. The forward progress was thwarted by a particularly long traffic light for ferry traffic, lame. It was one of my best runs in the past three weeks. I didn't have to think about my breathing too much and my knees and calves stayed quiet. Woo Hoo. Tomorrow is graduation run and then I get on a plane to my sister's wedding. Not a bad way to conclude the program. I think my partner and I have decided to follow up with the one hour runner after this. I like the idea of sticking at 30 minutes for a few weeks to get nice and comfortable before building more time.

Shell
