I am no where near my weight loss goals, but I keep on improving anyway. I am going to focus on weight loss in 2013 and finally reach a healthy body weight. I hope you are all doing great! I am also running the Hyannis Half marathon and hope to do a full in june!

I did my half marathon in Newton, MA and ran a 2 mile hill. About 250 feet or so. I ran along heartbreak hill and completed my 500 miles in 2012!. I am closing in on my goal of 50 pounds lost for the 2nd year making my grand total nearly 100 pounds so far. I got a treadmill and my home gym in my basement and work out every other day. I hope to break a 30 minute 5k in 2013 and do my first Marathon! Oh. And that last pesky 50 lbs.

The 3 year plan of 345 to 195 is on schedule. =)

(don't roll your eyes - I've been at it for 2 years now) Now it starts to get tough. I'm hot! I've got sweat dripping from my eyelids! Time for a 30 second walk. Time it start back up. Now I start to argue with myself. "We do not stop again till the water fountain!"

Was I ever so glad to see that water fountain!! Took a nice long drink, splashed water on my face and head. Then my brain starts up again. "We can quit. 8 miles isn't bad." NO! We have 10 planned, we do 10!! I find a good spot on my ipod, 7 good songs in a row. Now I was extrememly glad to see that water fountain again. I won the no stopping arguement this time around too. I slowed down, and just kept going.

So just keep going, keep moving forward.

Arthur

Thats awesome! I know that frustration of salt in the eyes and the thought about taking it easy. I have even had people tell me that they were lifetime runners and you should only do 3-4 miles. That is all well and good, but I want to do a marathon! I want to get the 26.2 sticker and know that I went from 345 to under 200. I want to achieve at a higher level than 11 minute miles. I want to keep going. I appaud you sir! I will think of your 10 miles on my next 6 mile run. I am nearing my 1 year anniversary with a 5k race on the same day as my first day out there in 2011. I am gonna fix my face with a grin and just run like death is chasing me. I think it's important we see this as it really is: a series of battles in the war of our lives. We have to succeed. Our families need us.

I am up to 4 mile runs twice a week and a longer 6 mile on the weekend. I am running in Luna sandals and there are no more knee issues. Yes, you heard me. Running sandals. I bet if I did stretch the fatigue and rubber legs would likely go away.

Keep going you guys I am nearing my 1 year anniversary of starting running and I feel amazing. When I started I couldn't run for more than 15-30 seconds. I completed a run that was 1 hour 15 minutes last weekend. Just keep going, don't get discouraged, don't stop.

Never stop.

Also here are a few tips about being self conscious:

1) Go to areas where there are other runners, I think others have mentioned this. People always support you if they share your interrests. It's the ones that won't/can't that want to tear you down.

2) Walmart sells starter compression shirts. They keep things....stationary...wear a t-shirt over them and they whick sweat away from your body and keep the experience a pleasant one. $15.

3) Chafing....yea, it's a delicate subject but our bodies rub together and chafe. You can get something called Body Glide that goes on like a stick deoderant. Amazon sells it if you don't want to buy it from a running store. It's about $10 and lasts for about 6 months.

You can also use it on your feet when you get new shoes to avoid blisters.

4) If your aim is to lose weight as well as gain fitness you are going to have to diet. Salads with dressing on the side is your friend. Go for garden salads when available as some fancy salads can contain 1000 calories

5) Loseit app helps you track calories (even has a bar code scanner)

6) Endomondo fitness tracker has a social component to it you can see your friends walks/runs/swims etc and comment. You can even send them pep talks during their runs. Amazing technology. They also have challenges where you can win things. I won some shoes from Li-ning as a random participant. It also helps you set goals (how can you set a goal if you don't know what your best is?)

There are some tips, now get out there!

I just finished W6D1 this morning and feel great. Last Friday, I knew I'd be able to take out the 20 minute monster because I'd read so many of your experiences.

I live in MA, just north of the RI border, and I've lived in the area my whole life (I grew up in Foxboro, where the Patriots play--go Pats!). I'm coming up on my 43rd birthday. I had already started a walking program when I decided to give C25K a try. Before this, I thought I hated to run. Now I realize that I hated to be pushed to run faster than I was capable of running. Over the past 5 weeks (and the months of walking before that), I've learned to manage my heart rate and my breathing so that it's what I think of as a comfortable effort--I'm working, but I'm not going to die.

Mostly, though, I started C25K because I'm trying to gain some control. My father-in-law, whom I loved dearly, passed away suddenly last May, and less than 2 weeks after the 1st anniversary of his death, I lost my closest cousin (and one of my best friends) to liver cancer at age 45. In other words, it's been a really, really tough year. Having someone else set a goal for me, having a plan, being able to accomplish that plan just by virtue of telling myself that I could...all of that seemed really, really appealing. And it has given me a positve outlet for my stress.

So this is getting long and risks getting tedious, but I did want to thank you all, especially the regulars. Wideguy, I hope you're out there, because it's gonna get hot in this neck of the woods in the next couple of days. Get going, and try not to burn your feet.

Go pats! I am around here too, just moving to Marshfield, gonna try some running on the beach =) What heart rate do you keep? I just did the 5 miler in easton and I had a strap on and I was 170+ the whole time. You are near the end, have you considered your 5k? Welcome and congrats on your progress!

I would love to jump that amount up a bit. I think my diet is probably my weak spot. I have tried following plans but when I put in my bmr it is 2454. When I attempt to cut out about 3-500 calories daily from that I simply don't lose. When I go at it more agressively 1500 or so calories a day I do lose, but I feel a bit ill. I was wondering if you could share some tips or advice, or perhaps explain your success. I did go to your blog, but I didn't quite understand your methods. I started C25k about 2 months ago. I got to week 4 and felt AMAZING!! I couldn't wait for each run. My knees didn't agree and I had to take a break for a couple of weeks to let them heal and to do some quad exersizes. I decided to start over at week one. Thank God I did. It was harder this time around than last time! Now I am about to start week 2 and have absolutely no motivation. I should have started 3 days ago. I was also using myfitnesspal.com and had lost 10lbs. In my 2 weeks of recovery, I gained 12 lbs and now I am not even using it. UGH!! I hate that I was injured. I feel like if my knees would have stayed with it, I would still be going strong! I cried the day I had to take a break from running. I had fallen in love with it! What is wrong with me now? I just want to sit on the couch and eat pizza all day. I am exhausted. I asked a friend if she'd be interested in starting c25k with me,so that I'd have a buddy to help keep me going. Hopefully that will work. I am just so... unmotivated.

I am so sorry to hear that. I wish I had a magic answer. Running is fun, but it can be brutal at times. All I can say is that I do have a strategy to take care of various problems. I found that different shoes affect me differently. The motion control Brooks affect my inner knee. My minimus 00 Trail affect my outer knee. My sandals affect my calves. My vibrams affect the mid sole of my foot. So what do I do? I use them all. Now that I know what does what I simply use the shoe that has an area not in pain at the moment.
