Re: Continuous or walk breaks?

It's clearly a crutch: it's easier for you to run a marathon by walking some parts than running the entire marathon, unless you walk faster than you run. Walk breaks help those who are not prepared to run the distance (please, no references to someone taking walk breaks in the middle of 135 miles in Death Valley) and you may think whatever you want of that, but they certainly are a crutch. If they weren't a crutch or an aid of some sort, they would either make no difference or make things harder, neither of which they are claimed to do by their proponents.

If the original poster is able to run the entire distance, it makes no sense to arbitrarily walk parts of the race. You might be fresher or more comfortable with walk breaks but you will not run your fastest time.

[http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Jul-06-2006).|http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Jul-06-2006).]

So, you don't need walk breaks at faster than 7:00 pace, but people running 6:00 pace use it just to make others feel better.

[http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Aug-10-2005).|http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Aug-10-2005).]

Classy, just classy.

I don't recall insulting you, so why the gratuitous personal insults, which seem to be a habit of yours.

quote:

My posts agree 100% with pfitzinger. As I've tried to make clear in EVERY post, even pace running is best.
And while I don't take walk breaks in 5k's & 10ks, my splits have been remarkably close and yes I do finish them all strong. When I am ready to do the same in a marathon, I'll do that also.

You might agree with Pete, but Pete might not agree with you. Even-paced
running
is the best strategy. Instead of using walk breaks as a crutch, learn to pace. That many people start races too fast isn't an argument in support of walking breaks, it's an argument in favour of proper training.

quote:

Gallowalkers who beat you are theoretically either working harder or are in better shape.[/B]

They are, much like anyone who enjoys a quick smoke after the gun goes off prior to joining the race.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing anymore. Previously, walking breaks were a good idea for those with a poor sense of pacing, and you enjoyed running five half marathons due to the incorporation of walking breaks. Now it seems that you sabotaged your effort since someone else who ran the same time as you was "theroretically...working harder". Furthermore, it is much easier to qualify for Boston (not that it's an exceedingly impressive athletic accomplishment to begin with) by running it in its entirety despite having had the hubris to shun the benefits of walk breaks.

[http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Aug-04-2005).|http://This message has been edited by aurang (edited Aug-04-2005).]

I think you'll win a few prizes this year. I was second, actually. It was really windy on the out portion, so I really didn't want to go out too hard. The awards were really nice, I picked up a long-sleeved T-shirt from Adidas.

It's a good, profitable start to the year. Happy New Year, everyone.
