Re: Run for your Life - week 11 (Sept 30-Oct 6)

Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a few days, I have been beyond busy and have just today been able to return any emails for the last week. I swear, sometimes I feel I am more busy being a stay at home mom than I was when I was working full time and traveling, training seminars! Crazy!

I've been carting my mom back and forth from the doctor's office and they finally diagnosed what was wrong with her leg. She has a herniated disc at the bottom part of her spine. It sucks, but at least we now know what is wrong with her (after four weeks) and we can get her treatment for it. It sounds like with treatment and therapy she'll be back to her old, active self within a few months. Her doctor was so apologetic about mis-diagnosing her (he wouldn't order the MRI until I about went ballistic on him one day, telling him he didn't have the correct diagnosis - he probably just ordered the MRI to get me out of his hair) he said she was the first person he had ever seen with a herniated disc in her back that didn't have back pain. The poor doctor, he felt so bad, but at least now we all know how to help her.

Okay, something other than my mom's medical appointment. I haven't run since Sunday and it's driving me insane. My husband has been working 15 hour days because he is under deadline and I don't want to leave Avery with my mom since she can't walk really well at the moment, so I've just been slogging away on the elliptical trainer. It's a good workout but I miss running soooo much! I never thought I would say that!!! I'm hoping to run Fri, Sat, Sun just to get back into the swing of things.

Rach - You did fantastic on your 5k!!! I'm so proud of you! And I was thinking about you while I was running my 5k as well, I was thinking to myself that you had already finished yours and were probably basking in the glow of your triumph! I spurred myself on by thinking that I wanted to bask right along side you! Also, I completely understand your thinking about the woman who was pregnant beating you; I had a man in my race who was pushing a double stroller and he finished in 21 minutes!!!! I was so insanely jealous. I'm not saying I want to finish in 21 mins. but goodness, he was pushing two children and practically halved my time. Ridiculous!

Stacy - I agree with everyone else. If the pain is getting increasingly worse I would definitely lay off the training for about a week and really give your leg some rest. Also, I think your BIL would be a great resource for you to get info from. If he runs marathons, I'm sure he knows about pain and how to help with it.

S2barunner - nice to hear from you! Great personal best time you posted! And I am completely with you on the music while running. I never used podcasts, I just downloaded some music that was motivating. I find the music motivates me so much more than my heavy breathing!

Chilikat - You're so positive!!! I am right there with you on the realization that we are now considered runners! Absolutely amazing and a bit unbelievable in my case. I never enjoyed running, I enjoyed all other activities growing up but running was definitely not one of them. Now I actually look forward to it. Have fun while your mom is there and with your family during your girl's weekend! I'm so jealous!

One more thing, I posted some pictures of my race on my blog. If you want to see the images in a larger fashion all you have to do is click on the image. My blog is www.jenjennyjennifer.typepad.com.[/URL" target="_blank">

Okay, now that I have written a book, I should probably get going so I can get some other stuff done during my daughter's naptime. Just one more thing, I decided to follow my Weight Watchers food plan again and I have already lost 3 pounds in four days. I know it's mostly water weight but I don't care what kind of weight loss it is,,, I'll take it!

Hope you are all well!
Jennifer

[http://This message has been edited by averysmama (edited Oct-04-2007).|http://This message has been edited by averysmama (edited Oct-04-2007).]

Hey Everyone!
Sorry I've ben MIA for a while but life seems to get the best of me at times and I seem to have no time. It looks like you are all doing well! The good thing for me is that even with my life being as hectic as it is right now I have still found time to go running and I'm still really enjoying it. I just got home from the gym where I decided to run on the treadmill instead of running on the trail. I haven't run on the treadmill in over three months and it felt soooo strange. I wanted to try the TM so that I could calculate how many calories I am burning during a run and also wanted to see how I would feel since winter is knocking on our door and I'll mostly be on the TM for the next few months. I ran 3.5 miles but I have to say I was kind of bored. I'm so used to running outdoors and viewing the scenery and there definitely is a difference in the way the running feels. The one thing I was a bit cocky about was the fact that I started running and there were two other people who got on the treadmills on either side of me and they both pooped out before me. I ran for 40 minutes and I felt so great running for longer periods of time than the others. I know, I know, they may have just planned to run for 20 minutes but I'm just saying I beat them and am a better runner than them for my own personal ego boost. Three months ago I would have been the one pooping out after ten minutes, I can't believe I ran 40 and could have run longer. Absolutely crazy!

Rach - Congrats on the 5k!!! I'm so impressed in the improvement on your time! More than five minutes difference, very impressive!!! Well done you on beating the teenager, I figure that is actually quite a great accomplishment because teenagers SHOULD be pretty decent runners, I would be shouting from the rooftop that I beat out a teenager in a 5k! I also think it was big of you to accept Aaron's a** kicking and are working on booting "the wimp" to the curb. Oooooh, I also watch Biggest Loser (LOVE IT!!!) and agree, I would love Jillian to get in my face and motivate me but I also adore Bob and would be happy to have him be my coach. I'm not too hip on Kim although I think she's nice.

Aaron - Nice to see you! By the way, I laughed my backside off in regards to your post about George on Grey's Anatomy, and I couldn't agree more! Callie IS the best thing that has happened to him. The boy's a moron! And very well done on your tough love speech to Rachel, it definitely needs to be said to all of us at times and it's a good reminder to just suck it up and do what we know we are capable of!

Stacy - Did you go for a run yet after resting your leg? How did it feel? Did the rest and potassium increase help?

Jen - It sounds like you are running great times! I'm sure you are excited for your first race. I'm running another 5k on November 10th and I just heard about a 5k right down the road from me on the 20th so I might run that one as well. I was sooo nervous my first race and then realized there was really no reason to be. I hope your training is going well,,, you better keep us posted on how you do!

Okay, so Avery is down for her nap and I need to get in the shower since I'm still smelly from my run. I just don't ever get a chance to get on the computer in the day and figured I would take the downtime to check in on you all. I hope you are all doing fantastic and look forward to more updates! Talk to you all soon!

Jennifer

Re: running vs getting pregnant?

I was wondering some of the same questions you asked. My husband and I have decided to get pregnant with our second child. I just finished c25k a couple of weeks ago and finished my first 5k and now I'm addicted to running. I had the same questions you did and asked my doctor. He said being healthy, and getting healthier than I was, actually helps and will not hurt my chances of getting pregnant at all. He told me I could still run through the first two trimesters (depending on how I was feeling) and then he suggested slowing down to walking through the last trimester. He said running/jogging is an excellent way to keep in good pregnancy health if it is something the body is already used to. He said he wouldn't suggest to someone to start a running program if they just found out they were pregnant but if the body was already used to that type of workout there is nothing wrong with keeping that type of workout through the first two trimesters. Hope this helps!

Also, I'm sooo impressed with BIGEM1's post! I can't imagine still running at 7 1/2 months pregnant! Incredible!

Jennifer

I just completed my first 5k (not nearly as good a time as you, 39 minutes) but you give me hope where running after pregnancy is concerned. My husband and I are trying for our second and the thoughts of being able to run a 5k after I give birth were a bit scary for me, not knowing how quickly I will be able to get back out there training. Your story is inspirational!
Jennifer

I can't believe how quickly the weekends fly by nowadays. But! I did find time to run today and did 3.5 miles in 39 minutes. The same amount of time it took me to do the 5k a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting faster!

Rach - Can't wait to hear about your 5k! It sounds like you did amazing from the little bit of info you dropped at the end of your post!

Dianne - Yay! It must be so nice to have your daughter there with you! And I'm jealous of your activity for the day, I would love to go apple picking. I LOVE the northeast in the fall, absolutely beautiful! I'm glad you are back to feeling normal while running. I know I've had a few runs where I feel strange and can't pinpoint what is actually wrong but it just is! It's nice to feel normal when you are doing something so physical.

S2barunner - You're last couple of sentences in your post completely hit home for me. I was bummed all last week about not being able to run. I ran last Sunday and then because of scheduling conflicts and no one being able to watch Avery for me I wasn't able to run again until Friday. I was so frustrated. You made me realize that even getting out for just a couple of days a week to run is a huge change from what I was doing 12 weeks ago (nothing.) I also am amazed, like you, in how my thinking has changed. Now, I really hate it when I am not able to run on certain days or for a longer amount of time because of time constraints or just obstacles I run into (like your daylight constraints.) I would never had thought twelve weeks ago that I would become addicted to running, but that's what I am, addicted. Who knew?

Thanks to everyone who said such nice things about my blog and my little girl last week. We think she's a cutie pie as well! She's definitely a little spitfire and has endless energy. I really should be a size 2 because keeping up with her takes soooo much energy!

Well, I am off for the night. I'm gonna be sleeping before 11pm!!!! I'm so excited, I get a full night's rest. I hope you are all well and enjoying your runs!

Jennifer

I started C25K in the end of July and ran my first 5k on Sep. 29th, only a couple of days after I finished the training. I finished in 39:04. I was told it was a hard course because it had a lot of hills and I definitely felt it, it was not a flat course by any means and I was not even close to my regular min. per mile pace. My next race is a flat "fast" course and I'm interested to see how I'll do on that course. BUT, I was so proud of myself when I finished the 5k because I have never been a runner and I still have some extra weight to lose (almost there.) My min. per mile pace ended up being 12:34.
