So what do I do when a 12 yr-old girl in an intramural softball game does this? Just a speculation! http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Video-Yorvit-Torrealba-punches-umpire-in-Venezu?urn=mlb-wp29024

Bat Hits Uncaught Third Strike

Had one at CDP couple yrs ago, quite different, but with similarities as to play the bounce. Was not an uncaught K3 situation. R2 only, RH batter, F2 misses a 'ball' way inside. Pitch hits the kneecup of my shinguard square-on, ball shoots toward the pitcher. Everybody kinda froze, as to "How'd that ball get out there?" No play action incurred. Was an odd, funny thing. I laughed afterward.

Nice that you, Manny and others can parallel so many baseball rules and understandings to fastpitch softball. I umpire both and despite their peculiar differences, the similarities make it quite easy for me to do both.

Clarification of batter inteference and batters box

Justaskin, KeinTime87 is correct on the judgment call on this one. I've encountered this one a few times myself. Yes, no rule states that the batter must vacate the box for a play at the plate, however, ASA Rules Supplement 33 B. does state: 'The batter's box is not a sanctuary for the batter when a play is being made at the plate.'

My view on that is that even though not required, its 'highly recommended' that the batter vacate the box on a play at the plate. Thus if a batter stays in the box on a play at the plate and is judged to interfere with such play, then INT rules apply. Advantage vs disadvantage and intent vs being in the wrong place at the wrong time......nicely stated by KeimTime87!

The Rules Supplements in the ASA Umpire Manual serve as an excellent explanation guideline, in general. Good stuff!

Rich, Manny said this was an ASA game, not MLB. ASA 8.2 F. 5.and/or 6. Either way, its a live ball by my fun in Manny's deal! And in softball, its 'dropped' 3rd strike, which is also 'uncaught' by true definition. I personally prefer 'uncaught', which is actually the universal definition of 'ball in flight', or 'not in flight', cleanly. Jeez by fastpitch def a pitch into the dirt is "dropped". Same as uncaught. So easy how softball fastpitch rules and baseball rules blend!
