Hi I know this thread is old but I hope your still around. I didn't read all

of the other responses but here's my $.02.

You say that your caloric intake has been the same over the past month, your

trying to lose weight which I may be wrong, means your most likely a beginner.

If you begin any new physical exercises, your muscles will begin to grow. As

you know muscle weighs more than fat. So gauging your success based on what the

scale says isn't always the best option. If I were you I would go to GNC and

pick up a set of calipers. They measure body fat instead of weight.

As I've said this was posted a month ago so IDK what you decided to do but I

would keep on the same path, buy some calipers. Or if you want an easier BF

estimation get a nice scale that uses BF impendence testing. It isn't as

accurate as other methods but used week to week it will be consistent in

telling you if you have gained or lost BF. I usually get discouraged when this

sort of thing happens to me but I have to remind myself that this kind of thing

happens.

and to the idea I saw that said low carb weight loss

was due to the fact that it is easier to take in fewer calories... well yes

kind of. While 1 carb contains 4 calories a single gram of fat contains 9. And

protein 4 as well. The body burns calories in order. First, you guessed it

CARBS. 2nd in line are fats and third down the list is protein. So if you take

in very few carbs then your body will use the fat you consume firstly. Your

most likely taking high amounts of it. While your body is metabolizing that fat

its using the protein in one of the hundreds of ways, my favorite energy source

can be used. So it feeds on your fat after there is nothing left. If your

hungry and you eat more then the process starts over. Which is why low carbing

works. Not because you eat fewer calories. You could actually eat more and

still lose weight. taking away the first energy source and allowing it to

feed on the fat you take in its cutting out a step leading to weight loss. You

can do the same thing with fats, its easier to lose weight but much, much

harder to low fat diet. Your only meat options include chicken breast and fish.

And you need your protein.

But planning your diet in bodybuilding is just as important as how you train. You have to feed your body and if you feed your body properly it will do the things you want it to do better. So if you design a diet around your goals you'll no doubt do better than the road your going down now.

Re: eating and not eating

Stop taking the drugs. Thats a good simple start.

one thing you should know is that if you are trying to lose weight the worst

thing you can do is skip meals. The reason bodybuilders achieve 3% body fat for

competition isn't because they eat once or twice a day. Most pros eat up to 7

to 8 times a day. Why? Because you metabolize nearly all calories 3-4 hours

after you eat. If you wait longer than that to eat you stop metabolizing and

you have to start all over again slowing the process down. So eating every 2

1/2 to 3 hours is from a metabolic stand point is the most effective.

Another pit fall of not eating the proper number of calories is that your

body will begin to eat its own muscle. It (your body) will believe that it is

starving, and since fat is a better longer lasting source for a starving body to

feed on, your muscle will atrophy first as your body saves the fat for a "rainy day". So your losing muscle not fat when you do

this.

I bet your asking "What do i care, I'm still losing weight when I get

on the scale?!" and you will for a while. But the thing about lean muscle

is that the more you have the faster your metabolism moves. Like I said about

the bodybuilders I need around 3,500 calories a day a pro bodybuilder needs

somewhere around 8-9,000 per day. All of their muscle requires more energy to

be taken in. The less muscle you have the slower your metabolism will be. So if

your losing muscle, and your trying to lose fat your metabolism will slow. And

eventually you'll have trouble losing weight no matter what you eat or how you

exercise.

And I could tell you all of this and it may not make a

difference. But if I were you I would stop taking the pills, and go see a

doctor. There is a laundry list of negative effects that your current habit

will cause; your bones will weaken, skin will react poorly, hair will fall out,

injuries are hundreds of times more likely. But tell a doctor what you've been

doing and see what help they can provide.

I guess I just didn't realize that other more experienced runners ran in the 9's also. But I guess its more about my own personal fittness than my own personal time. And about the shoes.... I'm wearing a pair of nike cross trainers. I'm 6'3" about 240 and I'm a college student I dont have much money to buy shoes. So what would you suggest? My current shoes aren't bothering me at all. I dont even notice them. I had some nice shin splints that I ran through, after the first .3 of a mile I really didn't feel it anymore. Since then I've started streching really well, that seems like such a no brainer but I didn't even think about it. But now no shin splints no lower body pain nothing. So what should I do for shoes, like I said paying a lot is out of question if I want to eat.

Does it work? As advertised. It is an

amazing feeling about 10 minutes into your workout. Notice I said workout, not

run. I am a college athlete and I've trained for strength for a long time. But

my career is coming to an end and I want to be in better overall shape. It

works well in adding size and strength for those interested in it. It does help

with fatige, I could lift heavier weights longer probably due to the fact my

muscles had higher levels of oxygen going to them than normal. However if I

lifted 2 major muscle groups in one day I was very, very weak in the second

lift I attempted.

With that being said I would not recommend it for distance running. Or any

running at all. It sped my heart rate noticeably. the feeling you get would be

the opposite of what you would usually feel during running, a "pump"

as its called almost hurts, and I assume a few minutes in your legs would be

fully pumped and it would hurt. My arms, chest, back, and legs would all pump

on their respective days, and it was pleasant in a strange sort of way. I dont

think you'd feel the same.

I wouldn't suggest taking it. But if you do dont, please dont waste money on

any BSN supp. they are overpriced and work almost as well as other cheaper

supps. If I were you starting off I would go to wal*mart, yes I actually said

that, and buy their brand of NO. believe it or not the active ingredient in

BSN's and Body Fortress' stuff is L-Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate, aka LAAK or

NOS. Another point brought up is the safety of the product to my knowledge long

term use hasn't been studied in this drug.

One last thing. Another reason to by the cheap stuff
is that not everyone reacts to LAAK the same. Some react very, very well (as I
do) some just react, and others react very little or not at all. So if your
interested in taking (I wouldn't) it buy the cheap stuff first.

Hi

So not only am I new to the thread

I'm new to running. I mean I've ran before but the majority of my experience

has come from my time playing football, the farthest I ever ran in one sitting

is 2 miles. Last night I ran 1.2 and I hope to push myself past that tomorrow.

I ran the mile in roughly 9 minutes. I know its slow but I've been running for

a week now and everybody has to start somewhere. I also need to incorporate

weights into my daily routine, I used to train solely for strength so I lifted

weights and ate non stop. It worked as I gained a lot of muscle. but now I need

to get in better shape for my career. But I need to maintain strength as I am a

college cheerleader (lifter) and my career there isn't over. So I'm open to any

help anyone can provide and I admittedly know very little about running. So

I'll look around some and I would appreciate your help.

Shep
