Runner on 2nd with one out, Batter hits a line drive that hits off the pitchers foot and is caught by SS before hitting the ground. SS thinking it was grounder throws to first for the apparent force out on batter at first. R2 is now on 3rd. As soon as the out is recorded Defensive coaches run onto field and are calling for timeout to see condition of pitcher who is rolling on the ground in pain. After a few minutes the pitcher is fine, sore but fine and wants to continue pitching and after some warm up pitches the game resumes. Before the next pitch, the Defensive coaches tell pitcher to throw to 2nd base for appeal, (The runner is on 3rd) for the force out since it fly out not force out on 1st base. After discussion by Umpires the ruling was that the ball was a fly out and runner on 3rd out on appeal and ends the inning with the 3rd out.

Offensive team argues that player on 3rd base should have been allowed back to 2nd with no appeal since it was the Defensive team that ran out on the field and stopped play.

Question 1: Is it a fly out since ball never hit the ground after it deflected off pitchers foot?

#2: Should runner on 3rd have been sent back to 2nd base or called out on the appeal for not tagging up?

What is rule on an unintentional deflection of a fly ball or line drive caught by another player? I believe they got it wrong by allowing the out on Appeal as they awarded the defense an out they didn't earn and created the confusion by running onto field while calling timeout in concern of the injured player.

The parents understood and it wasn't apparent until mid season that the 2 who were capable of playing Majors. There were 3 players not 4 twelve years old. None of the 3 had LL experience. One of them might try Juniors next season.

Rules Broken or Not.

Our League has a rule that if a Ten or Eleven year old refuses to go to Majors and wants to stay in Minor A they must sign a Waiver. Of course, this abides by the LL Rules, and that player cannot at anytime during the season go up to the Majors. But another stipulation of signing the waiver and not going to Majors is that if they do sign Waiver it also prevents them from being chosen onto any of the ALL-STAR teams. Does this In House Rule Violate any LL Rules. It gets really touchy when it comes to 10 yr olds as some parents want to see them play baseball instead of riding the bench for entire season? I really do not like this imposed on 10 year olds, myself, but it's what has been going on the past 5 years that I've been in this league.

The league uses the Titling system of draft not the Re-draft method. Is it possible (Abiding by LL Rules) to add a New team without having to redraft the entire division and not manipulate the draft in any way. There were twenty 11 yr olds and four 12 year olds in Minor A. Of those at least 2 twelve yr olds and 10 eleven year olds were Majors capable but were not selected in Majors draft.

Re: Can a runner slide into first base after hitting the ball in LL?

How ironic, this just occurred at a Minor B game with coaches as the umpires. As Board member I was asked to settle a disagreement. Team A was adament about it being an out. I gave asked him to show it to me in rulebook where it said it was an out. I didn't see the play, as I was watching the game on the field next to this one. I did mention that the only way he would be out is if runner went head first. They said "He did" but what did occur was the player trip and fell forward. At the end of the game I approached the Coach and told him to Google the 40 Myths of Baseball, print them out and memorize them. Even more irony was the fact that since it was the last game of the season, the Coach of Team A turned in equipment that included their bucket of Balls. You'll never guess what I found at the very bottom underneath all the balls..........their RULEBOOK with evidence it had never even been opened. Go Figure!
