JLDOWNE - loved reading your post!!

Just an update - the "baby" is now 18 months old. I also did that same sprint tri last year when she was 5 months and this past year when she was 17 months.

Reading through all these posts makes me realize how much misinformation/old wives tales are out there regarding pregnancy and exercise.

Especially that heart rate bit - the ACOG removed heart rate guidelines for exercise over 15 years ago! They now tell you to focus mainly on rate of percieved exertion.

JLDOWNE - I agree on the bike crash at 10 wks. that was my last outdoor bike ride for the pregnancy due to risk of falling. Ironically, when I was 8 months along, I was

involved in a major car accident. My car was totalled when a 91 year old driver ran a red light. My two kids and I were taken to the hospital and THANK GOD no one was hurt!!

But I still drove for the rest of the pregnancy...

Water was cold, bike was fast and mostly flat, run was hot and sunny (which I tend to like)... I felt great, placed third in my division, #102 overall - not too shabby all things considered...

However, most everyone who competed was shocked to find out that a man in his thirties died during the swim portion of the race. Also, a forty year old woman was taken to the hospital and is still there in critical condition. http://www.townonline.com/cohasset/news/x49775838

This race was held in a very small town area - I knew quite a number of the people that I was racing with as I am sure a lot of the others did too. So this has been quite a shock for everyone.

You have to meet certain minimum standards for time/rank in your age group in a certain number of races within one year. Also, of course, you need to be a member of USAT to get ranked. I think it is something you can apply for if you think you meet the standards.

Check out the USAT website - all the info should be there. Sorry, I don't have the link for you...

Joe_h1 -you sound like a reasonable guy who just doesn't want to see anyone get hurt.

I was never asking for anyone's approval/permission to do this race. My husband, my family and my doctor have already granted that. But since it seems to be such an emotional issue to everyone I will add the following... I am racing for fun, that means to me - no speeding around on the bike, no aerobars and I am still undecided on the pedals (to clip or not). I am also concerned about traffic while training which is why I have mostly limited my training to spin classes (I teach them anyway). All the remainder of my outdoor riding is always done on quiet roads with at least one other rider. The risk of a bike accident is always there and

whether pregnant or not, I still have two other children to take care of so a bike accident (or any other type of accident) is always a consideration.

The only other thing I can add to that is - By the grace of God, I go. And by the grace of God, I will race in less than two weeks, have a great time and then put my bike away early this year. I am plannning on doing two races in September (only the swim and the run).

As far as bohnster goes, his original post was so pathetic/thoughtless that it didn't even deserve a reply.

I did say that my doctor has already ok'd this and that I will only be 10 weeks pregnant so there is very little chance of trauma to the abdomen in the case of a fall. Maybe some of you don't realize that cycling is generally considered safe up until the fourth month of pregnancy.

In my defense, I have already researched this extensively - this is my third pregnancy and I exercised (taught kickboxing, karate and spinning) through the other two as well. I am also a certified personal trainer.

What I was really looking for was Been There, Done That information- thanks to those of you who did provide that!
