ok to run while recovering from whiplash?

I was rear-ended about 10 days ago and have been suffering from some "mild" whiplash. My doctor said I shouldn't run until I felt better, but my massage therapist says she thinks it would be ok to go for a short, easy run. I am really missing my runs. I was supposed to run a half marathon in 2 weeks, but it's looking doubtful now. I don't want to aggravate my neck/back, but I need some exercise!!! Anyone dealt with this before?

Will I be wearing nappies for the rest of my running life?

I am 54 and also only have the problem when running - usually after about 3-4 miles, but sometimes right at the beginning of a run. I am training for a half marathon and wonder how in the world I'll ever make it 13.1. I'll need a SUPER nappie! How many kegels does one have to do to see improvement? I currently "deal with the problem" by wearing a pad.

question about scheduling/training

I started the C25K last May, ran a 5K, then did a 10K schedule and have run two 10Ks, now looking toward a half marathon this fall. Have been reading a lot about increasing endurance/speed, so I'm trying to work in some intervals and tempo runs. I run 3 days a week - currently that includes two shorter runs (3-4 miles) and one long run (6-7miles). How do you work in intervals while also trying to follow a half marathon schedule? I was thinking of doing an interval session every other week in place of one of the shorter runs and turning one of the shorter runs into a tempo run. Should I be doing tempos/intervals every week? I'm still trying to increase my distance as I've never run further than 7 miles. I am trying to walk 3-4 miles on non-run days and doing some light strength training as well. I will add that I'm 52 and "blessed" to be in a community with quite a few speedy women in my age group - I don't want to be last every time! Thanks for any help!

Re: What can I focus on to get me through the run???

When I started the C25K program I felt the same way. It felt like such a huge chore! I had tried to complete a 5K program before and failed twice. Last year I succeeded and the difference for me was having a running buddy I felt accountable to and who helped keep me going. Many a day I whined "I can't run 5 minutes" or "I can't possibly run 8 minutes!!", but each time I did what the schedule told me to do that day. Getting past the point of running an entire mile was such a psychological boost! I did so much better mentally once I wasn't timing myself anymore - when I was running a distance, not for a certain number of minutes - something about watching the clock made me focus on when I could quit running. It won't always feel like it does now - why would so many people run if it did? You can do this!!! When I started the program I was just eight weeks away from my 52nd birthday - that first 5K was the best birthday present!!
