A New Book, Tapping the Fountain of Youth – Profiles of Women Runners over 50,by Carol Hansen Montgomery Is Now Available from Amazon.

This book describes the lives of 28 women athletes, ranging inage from 50 to over 80. Each tells her story in her own words beginning with early life and family, to getting started in running, along with training methods, diet, dealing with injuries, accomplishments, and future outlook.

Some of the women profiled in this book are downright amazing. For example, Lois Ann Gilmore, discovered running in her 60’s after recovering from breast cancer, survived a stroke in her 70’s, and now sets age-group records in her 80’s. All of the stories are inspiring.

It’s a fact that there is a new running boom underway– a tsunami of running women! Indeed, according to statistics posted at runningusa.com, the percentage of women participating in road races has grown from 33% to 55% inthe past two decades, with the number of female road racers totaling over sevenmillion in 2011.

Most of this increase is occurring in the younger age groups. Young women runners must surely wonder what the future holds if they continue the sport into their later years. The stories of the pioneering women in this book will light the way ahead, showing that running can improve the quality of their life, and truly serve as a fountain of youth

Women of all ages will find this book fascinating and exciting. All can identify with, learn from, and be inspired, by the accomplishments of these athletes. Kathrine Switzer, well-known as the first woman to officially compete in the Boston Marathon, notes in herforeward, “All female road racers should read this book at sometime in theirrunning lives, because guess what? Ready or not, we’re all going to get older.”

A former Professor and Library Director at Drexel University inPhiladelphia, PA, Dr. Montgomery has written or edited over 40 scholarly papers and seven books. She is also anaccomplished runner who finished second in the over-70 age group at the 2005 Boston Marathon. She divides her time between residences on the beaches of Ocean City, NJ and Treasure Island, FL. Many of the women profiled in the book are from these areas.

The book is now available from Amazon.comwith either black-and-white or color photos.

For additional information, contact Carol Montgomery at 609-938-0331, or carolhansen@gmail.com.

I ran the half marathon this year. As usual, it was very well done -- great course, many volunteers, lots of spectator support, good age groups, and rapid results.

My one sugestion for improvement would be for a later start time. The 6 AM start is a bit early for those who drive from out of town, but more importantly, it is dark at that time, and difficult to see where one is stepping. It made sense to to start this early when there was a marathon starting at the same time, so as to clear the city streets for the afternoon, and for the slower runners to avoid the mid-day sun. But, now that the marathon is no longer run, the half marathon start could be moved to 7 AM.

Thumbs up and 5 stars!
