You guys are right, I just need to get adjusted to the road again. It's rough though let me tell you! haha It's been hard for me to get past the mental part of "I used to run this far before" to "this is how far I can run right now". I'm just going to take it run by run, I know I can get back to where I was, it's just going to take a little work. It's funny how I took for granted when I ran 5 or 6 miles outside in the morning, at a pretty good pace and thought I wasn't fast enough. LOL. Now I made it through 2 miles and I"m thinking the same way. LOL. I just gotta change my thinking I guess!

Happy Running,

Kerry

On the road again....question

I just started running on the road again after many months of doing the treadmill and not much training. I can run on the treadmill a good 3 or 4 miles without stopping, but when I took to the road this past week, I am struggling to do 2 miles without getting sore shins or feeling heavy. My lungs are still in terrific shape, even though I've put on some weight and my time has slowed down a bit.

My question is, is it ok to focus on road running and not so much on the mileage, at least until I get myself back in better shape and can go longer? I know I'm going to have to push through the wall but its very frustrating for me to get out on the road and feel sluggish and not be able to do the mileage I once could do or can do on the treadmill. Has anyone gone through this?

Thanks in advance...

Lots of information. I know that Tosca Reno has a clean eating book as well but I haven't checked that one out yet. I also liked "The Detox Diet", not sure who the author is, I"m not at home to check. It's not a diet but tells you what foods to eat to clean you out and how to eat more clean. You can also do a search on amazon.com and just type in "clean eating", you'll come up with a ton of hits. Good luck!

Kerry

Thanks for the encouragement Jacqui, it's good to feel like I"m not alone in this battle. I think it will be great to be back in the game. This will be my 19th road race and I know it won't be my fastest, but at least I'll be back in action. I had a bad pf/heel spur injury over a year ago which kept me off my feet for about 6 months so the weight I had lost (75 lbs) started to creep back up and find me. After spending last year feeling sorry for myself, I found my mojo again and decided to fight back. It's going to be a long, tough journey back but a satisfying one in the long run. I love running! Now if this snow would go away, it would be nice to run on the roads instead of the dreadmill. LOL I live on the border of Southern NH and the roads are covered with ice, snow and 6 ft tall snow bankings...on the sidewalks. Nice. LOL!

That's great you are working with a personal trainer and are getting back into it. I will probably have to walk some too, but that's ok. I'd love to do a 10k someday and my goal is a half marathon. Keep up the awesome work and again, thank you (and the other posters as well) for the encouragement and support. These boards are great.

Happy Running!

Hello everyone,

I've been doing races for over 4 years....last year I put on some weight (about 50 lbs) and only did one race, which was very difficult for me and I haven't done one since. I've been running my butt off and getting healthy but my speed isn't up to par with what it was say 2 years ago, about a 5 minute per mile difference. I have a 5k in April that I want to do but I keep doubting myself and I feel like I will be way too slow..not that I was ever fast at a 9:30-10 minute mile, but for me, that was fast. LOL. Now i'm at like a 15 minute mile. I feel like I cannot get up the courage to run the race in April. I can't stop comparing mself to me 2 years ago and it's been rough. I know I have to gradually work up to the speed and the weight isn't going to come off in a month, it's just discouraging. I usually have a positve attitude, and I still do, I'm just so scared to attempt this race at this weight. I can run 3-4 miles now without stopping, so my endurance is still there, just not the speed.

Any advice, comments or suggestions would be welcomed....I need some encouragement. My hubby says go for it and this is where I'm at now so suck it up...which I agree with, but I just dont' want to feel like people are thinking "good job fatty" when I cross the finish line...hahaha

Help!!!!!

I also like to bring the 100 calorie packs for snacks because it's already portioned out for me. I also marinate boneless chicken strips and throw them on the bbq for me and the hubby, so good!! Banannas are also a great portable snack. You can always throw a potato on the grill and wrap it in tin foil and also corn on the cob.

I find it very difficult to pack food for a camping trip. I'm going this weekend and I'm making my list right now. I try to portion everything out before I go so I know how much I'm eating, it makes it much easier. Good luck! !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

----

"There are only two choices: make progress or make excuses."
Kerry - BELIEVE[/URL" target="_blank">
