quote:

Originally posted by lx33me:

I just checked the Lake Run Club site and the half marathon in Normal is not on the race calendar and I do believe I heard someone the other night say they didn't think it was going to happen this year so I may have to look at the Mahomet half.

Oh dear, there go my plans! Maybe it will be cool at Mahomet somehow this year...

If there really is no Normal half, I may finally get my chance to race the Decatur Shoreline Classic 15K on September 16. Oh wait, on the Decatur site, they have the Normal half listed...Decatur Running Club[/URL" target="_blank">

Must just be an error. I am sure the club that puts it on (Lake Run) knows more than Decatur. Might have to check out the Dawson 5K, Curt. There aren't a lot of August races, and I keep looking to break that 20 min 5K barrier. Probably would've done it a long time ago had I not gotten myself into the slippery slope we call marathoning!

--<del>
New half marathon PR[/URL" target="_blank">
Positive thoughts</del>negative splits!

[http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited May-18-2006).|http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited May-18-2006).]

We've had similar discussions on this board before. Someone posted a pic of a guy who runs 2:20-2:30s in Brooks Beasts (probably at least an oz. heavier than your Omnis). Not sure what his story was. I am a graduate student in nutrition and did my undergrad in dietetics and I am certain I even heard about this in my undergrad classes. I don't have a link to the actual article, but this site addressed the question by referring to a research article in a peer-reviewed journal -- the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Iron content & cooking methods[/URL" target="_blank">

quote:

Paula Radcliffe is anaemic and apparently she eats large quantities of chocolate for the extra iron she needs. /B

This statement is much more far-fetched than the iron cookware issue! Long distance runners are very body-conscious. I doubt she would overindulge in such a high-fat source of iron. Animal sources of iron (heme) are better absorbed than what would be found in chocolate. And if Paula's a vegetarian, there are several other options higher in iron than chocolate! But hey, more power to her if this is true. I'd chow down a chocolate bar right now if I thought it would make me run like she does!

--<del>
Highly classified information[/URL" target="_blank">
Positive thoughts</del>negative splits!

[http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Jun-13-2006).|http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Jun-13-2006).]

Endurance has the same number of grams of carbohydrate per 8 oz svg (14 g) as traditional Gatorade. Endurance, however has three times as much potassium (90 vs. 30 mg) and almost twice as much sodium (200 mg vs. 110). The electrolytes are the only difference.

Theoretically, you shouldn't need fewer gels than you would with traditional Gatorade. However, you might find that you need a lesser amount of electrolytes. So if you're one of those people who use electrolyte capsules, you may ditch them. Also, you may consider a gel formula w/o added electrolytes, although I think you'll have a hard time finding them. I know that Gu and PowerGel both contain added electrolytes. I think that HammerGel may not, but don't hold me to that. The trend is to include them in everything to reduce the incidence of hyponatremia (extremely low levels of blood sodium that can lead to coma and even death).

--<del>
...on your left![/URL" target="_blank">
Positive thoughts</del>negative splits!

[http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Apr-12-2007).|http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Apr-12-2007).]

Believe me, you want to leave this detail to your imagination.

Just start out easy (don't try to break any PRs) and you'll be passing people from mile 20 onward. Yes, I am serious! I wouldn't have believed it either, I mean, all these people are experienced marathoners that have met/surpassed a qualifying time, and they've heard all the Boston advice a million times... but still they go out too fast and blow up.

Trust me, it's a much better feeling psychologically to go out slowly and pass people on the hills, than to go out too fast and be the one getting passed.

--<del>
New half marathon PR[/URL" target="_blank">
Positive thoughts</del>negative splits!

[http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Mar-30-2006).|http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Mar-30-2006).]

Re: Are there Boston marathon pace groups?

Um, yeah. The way they seed you, into corrals of 1,000 based on your BQ time gives you a whole bunch of similar-paced marathoners with whom you can run. I have done another big marathon (Chicago) three times and it always surprises me how much the crowd around me changes (in terms of paces of those running near me). I tend to be conservative and start a bit further back than my times might indicate, so I end up passing a lot of people. Maybe that's not the most efficient way to do things, but it sure feels a lot better than being passed by others. In Boston, however, it seemed like the pack around me remained consistent. There wasn't a lot of forward or backward movement, except on the hills, where those who went out too fast paid the price.

All that said, you're in luck if you'd be happy running a pace similar to the one you BQed with. Also keep in mind Boston is a more difficult, tricky course than many other marathons. Even if you run a time equal to your PR, I think that you'll have probably run a better race -- unless your PR was on a really tough course. On the other hand, if you're a 3:10 marathoner and you think you've trained crazy hard enough to try for a 2:55, you're probably out of luck. For one, you'll be seeded w/ 3:10-ers. For two, the course is really crowded and narrow. Even if you've got a 2:55 in you, it's going to be tough to move up that much. Hmmm, perhaps things will be better this year though w/ the 2 wave start.

--<del>
New pic, new PR at Chicago 2005[/URL" target="_blank">
Positive thoughts</del>negative splits!

[http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Feb-25-2006).|http://This message has been edited by kspowell (edited Feb-25-2006).]
