Battling Numbness

For those of you who are seasoned cyclists, I have an embarrassing problem that I need some advice on.

I am a relatively new triathlete. I have competed in three sprint triathlons this season and I am currently training for the South Carolina Half Iron Man in September. During my last two biking sessions - rides of 25 and 35 miles - I have experienced numbness in my groin (this is as tactful as I can say it without getting graphic) area that has lasted from hours to a day. Here are my questions:

Is this normal?

Should I be worried about this?

Can saddles make as much difference as I've read about?

What saddles are the best to relieve pressure on the perenial nerve?

I'm 37 yrs. old and don't want to do anything that would affect my enjoyment or performance in the long run when it comes to being married to my beautiful wife.

Thanks for your feedback!

Concerned Triathlete

Re: questions from first timer

Here's two pieces of advice regarding the swim:

First off, focus on developing proper technique. Many beginning triathletes neglect swim technique, failing to understand that technique plays a huge role in efficiency and speed. Proper technique will also help you reserve your energy and leave you feeling strong as you approach the bike and run.

Second, since your race is a sprint, spend a good amount of pool time doing sprint work. Performing sets of 25's, 50's, and 100's with short rest intervals (20-30 sec.). This will build both endurance and speed for a relatively short swim.

Best wishes for a great first traithlon experience.

Re: First Triathlon

Your question depends on the length of the triathlon. If this is a sprint race, then you have time to develop basic aerobic fitness as well as technique in the water. Same for the bike.

Personally, if the race is anythhing longer than a sprint, I would hold off. The previous poster is right - you can't bluff the swim and swimming 1500m to 1.2 miles is tough regardless of how strong you are in the water. Since you're on ground, you can always stop on the bike or run. You can't do that in the water.

Good luck!
