Re: ITBS and a half marathon in one month. Help

I found ART (active release therapy) to be really helpful, plus the patt strap, foam roller (I did it before and after running and also in the evening), the usual IT band stretches and better overall stretching/warmup/cooldown habits in general. The patt strap allowed me to continue training...but I never ran through acute, gait changing pain. Also, after the ART sessions, I usually had some inflammation and waited 48 hours before running again. The half went fine. i think it also depends on what initially has caused your flare up and if you can fix that problem..my IT band was injured during the downhill portions of a super steep trail run, so I had to learn how to run downhill properly. Best of luck to you!

Hi there, I agree with Lieren...you can chart your cycles and figure out pretty easily if you are ovulating and if you have a normal length luteal phase. One certainly can get pregnant while running a great deal; I'm 23 weeks pregnant now...I got pregnant in the height of training for Boston and I was running 65 - 70 mpw.

But perhaps you could ask your doc if she was referrring specifically about luteal phase defects or if there are other issues regarding exercise and conception. It does seem like low body fat as a result of running can correspond with hormonal problems in some women and this would certainly affect ovulation/conception...but if you aren't experiencing this then I would ask for more information.

Good luck to you...also on the runners world women's message board there is a specific thread devoted to women runners who are trying to conceive; you might get more information there. I wish you the best!

I'm feeling pretty good, but big and slow which goes with the territory. Next week we (hopefully) will find out the baby's gender which is exciting.

I can't believe you can get out to run twice a day! I have to do it first thing in the morning or else my motivation wanes. I'm still getting in 6 - 7 mile runs about 5 days a week.

There don't seem to be too many pregnant runners around here. I found a nice group of women on the Runner's World site, in the Women's forum....come join us! There are women in all stages of pregnancy who are running, walking, exercising etc. It's a nice group.

I hope you are well! How is your pregnancy going?

take care,

Steph

I've always managed to find time to run by getting up really early in the morning. Luckily my husband is very supportive and he gets the kiddies up and makes breakfast every morning. He is a sweetheart. I found it pretty easy to ramp up my mileage, I'm fortunate in that I seem to be built for running...although I'm not very athletically inclined in any other sense. Whoa, I can't believe you're doing two runs a day....I really can only get myself out the door in the AM. Also, we're having a heatwave around here and it is in the nineties. Ugh. Well, I got a good 7 mile run in this morning and I actually felt pretty zippy for the first time in awhile. I hope this is the second tri energy burst!

happy running!

I hear you on the longer runs, though. I was running 65 - 70 mpw before I was pregnant and now I struggle to do 35! I've recently cut back my daily runs from 8 miles to about 6 or 7 because I was getting SO exhausted. But I had a super slow 7.5 mile run today and then took a nice long nap in the afternoon.

hongkongrunner...I agree with Anneliz, being able to run a 1/2 will probably depend on your dr.'s advice, your running ability prepregnancy, and how your particular pregnancy is progressing. It will probably also mean redefining what "racing" means to you (participation vs a fast time). But the above mentioned book may be a good place to start. Keep us updated!

I think it would be great to keep in touch too...maybe we'll find some other pregnant runners as well!

Take care and happy running,

Steph

I'm not doing anything longer than a really slow 8 miles these days. (It was utterly unbearable with the first two.) I too am at the very end of my first trimester and my energy is coming back. I have found that I need a lot more rest and recovery, so proper nutrition and sleep has been essential. Running does feel really good, and I hope to stick with it for as long as I can. I also plan on incorporating walking and swimming as the summer heats up.

Congrats on your pregnancy and happy running! I hope your morning sickness is on the way out. Also, don't be hard on yourself about exercise and weight gain...you know you can lose it after the baby.

My original question was whether there was a safe and modified way to participate in a marathon to which there are differing opinions....I'm pretty sure I'm not running Boston because it seems there are valid risks, but I certainly don't feel bad about being disappointed in that fact.

Wow, I appreciated everybody's opinion on the marathon but certainly don't appreciate being judged by someone who has no idea what they are talking about and no constructive information to add to the conversation.
