Participants were given a free shirt, goodie bags and lots of free samples after the race. The pre-race speech was a bit lengthy, but that wasn't a surprise given that the event had a very specific cause.

There was a pre-race warmup lead by a group of Marine's spread throughout the crowd, which I found to be both corny and useful. The course itself wound through Seaport Village and was actually quite pretty. No hills or anything tricky, just flat pavement.

I would absolutely, positively do this event again, and I would consider paying for it if the price was $10 or less.

After participating in this event, I came up with some alternate names I might called this event:

"The Mostly Dirt Run"

"4k Mud Run (with Mandatory 6k Uphill Run Preceding)"

"The Manure Run"

1k: No mud, sprayed by a couple fire hoses.

2k: No mud, ankle deep "river" crossing

3k: No mud, running in sand

4k: No mud, lots of uphill running

5k: No mud, still running uphill. Tire obstacle was 3 tires wide and could easily be jumped over. Dud.

6k: First mud pit/wall/mud pit combination...FUN! Transition right into the 4 ft. deep river (lake?) crossing. MORE FUN!!!

7k: A bit more running on slight hills.

8k: Second mud pit/wall climb/mud pit combo, then into a tunnel crawl (more pain than fun, lots of sharp pebbles but no mud in the tunnels).

9k: Muddy hill climb...a bit of a bottleneck but still a blast. They should have had 2 hoses blasting down the hill, but one made it fun. Would have been more fun without a line as you could have slid around a bit.

10k: Final mud pit that required you to crawl through. Nasty but fun!

Would I do it again? Probably not. If it was half the distance with more obstacles, yes, I would. My entire team expected to be head-to-toe in mud at the finish, but we were barely dirty. All in all it was fun, but left me wanting more.

I've been researching this for nearly a month now, and I've bumped up my budget significantly. The cheap bikes just don't give me the confidence I was hoping for.

My extensive search for a bike has had me on about a dozen bikes, and I've come to some conclusions:

1. Carbon frames tend to soak up the road bumps much better than aluminum frames (This is a big plus for my 40-mile roundtrip commute!)

2. You DEFINITELY get what you pay for. After riding a Giant OCR A0, the OCR 3 felt like it was made of cement.

3. Quality shifters make a big difference to me

4. Minor changes in weight do make a bike feel harder to move

At this point now, I'm doing my best to find an acceptable bike under $1000. If I find some way to justify it, I'll probably go for the Specialized Tarmac Elite. It absorbed big bumps, fit my body well, and was a blast to ride. I took it for a long test ride and it felt like it wanted to go faster!

Decisions decisions!
