It is not a dumb question at all. I had this exact same problem, thought I had a great playlist to run to, then found some music either slowed me down or made me run too fast. Matching the music to your pace is very important to be efficient when running, because it's like magic once you reach that comfortable pace (after about 10 minutes for me!).

What has really helped me is a running program that mixes music with the voice of a coach. Not only does it keep your pace regular, but the voice of the coach is so encouraging, it really keeps me running. And the great thing is you can use your own music playlist or they'll create one for you. It's called Jiwok, you should check it out, it's made me enjoy running much more. Here's the link:

http://www.jiwok.com/en/index_eng.php

Finally got out running this weekend, thank goodness my daughter is better!

Happy running :-)

Well I just joined Active and clicked on this thread first, and am so pleased I did! It's so nice to know there other slow runners out there like me, and that you don't have to be super speedy to be an efficient runner.

I started running with no program, no training, nothing, just me and my music. It was ok for a while, then I got bored and realised other runners were always passing me in the park...I was slow! I thought maybe it was my music slowing me down, maybe not choosing the right tempo to match my heart rate, so I changed my playlist. Faster songs made me run faster, but it was too much for me and I had to stop sooner than I had before. So what is better; running faster for less time, or slower for a longer time? As I was trying to lose post-pregnancy weight, I opted for the slower regime again, rather than increase my endurance, but I needed to master my race pace. I searched the internet and found a training program that helped me do just that, with music that made me run at the right tempo along with the voice of a coach to keep me motivated. I have to say, it's brilliant, and now I'm actually attempting there 'Run Faster' program, just to see if it works. If it doesn't, I'll happily stick with my slower songs and keep challenging myself other ways.

Cheers to all my fellow penguins!
