Re: side stitches

I don't know how or when I came up with this technique, but when I get a sidestitch I switch into a breathing pattern of slowly exhaling to the count of four, ensuring that my lungs are empty before inhaling, for a count of one. If I continue this breathing pattern I can usually run or bike through a sidestitch. There may not be any scientific basis to this technique, but it certainly won't hurt trying...

It sounds like it would be best for me to put off the speed work until after the race.

Hi, I'm training for my first race, a half-marathon. I've been building kilometers with little attention to speed for the last couple months. Just got a brand new sportsband yesterday and, yikes, now I can see, approximately, my time and pace! Will I see any benefit to doing speed work in the last month before the race? If so, what kind of work do you recommend? I hear over and over that I shouldn't be too focused on time this first race, but sub 2 hours shouldn't be too ambitious.
