How do you get in shape for ski season?

I live in California and don't get up to the mountains to ski that often, but I do have a few trips planned this year. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get in shape--and stay in shape--for skiing and snowboarding? I am specifically looking for exercises that will strengthen my legs and knees, and help get my body ready for the slopes.

Thanks!

Overall Fitness for Fall

I love mountain biking, which is great for my legs and lungs but I want to focus on building core muscles, tightening my bum, and building overall fitness. Does anybody have full body fitness exercises to recommend? I would love them to be outdoors focused for the fall but anything will do.

She said as long as I am on a bike<del>any bike</del>for the alloted time it counts as a workout. I was not training to be competitive or anything, I just wanted to have some fun while training. I am curious to see what people have to say about true comparison though.

I LOVE the thought of ocean-side yoga! Ocean swimming on the other hand scares me. I've been intrigued by the P90X videos but I'm turned off at the thought of working out in front of the tv. My sister just got the videos though so I will see what she has to say about them.

I went canoeing this weekend which turned out to be such a fun way to spend the day outdoors. It's not exactly a cross-training workout as I probably didn't burn enough calories to offset the beer consumed but it was a something different and super fun!
