Re: Running as Transportation

Glad to see this post. With all the good reasons for running to work, I hope everyone that has this option gives it a try. Here are my top reasons:

1- It's cool! At least, I think so. Just imagine having this conversation with your colleagues: "How do you get to work?" "I run." "You run?! Where do you live?" "In the city." "That's 8 kilometers away!" "Well, sometimes I bike."

2- Save money By running, I save money on gas, parking, and travel expenses. Since I use the office shower, I'm also saving on my water expenses. We should also probably add in all the savings that come with improved health.

3- Save time Running to work takes me about forty-five minutes. Driving would take me about a half an hour. A bus would actually take me an hour. But since I would run anyway, I'm actually cutting the time I would use for travel and running in half.

4- Save the environment Not using a car is one of the best things a person can do for the environment. Anyone that runs to work can hold their head high.

4- Save your health Of course, we can't discount all the health benefits of running!

Paul in Okinawa
My Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">

I'm guessing it's not possible to run in the rain with an ipod.

I run in the rain with an iPod all the time, and it's never been a problem.
Surreptitious Advertising on Coolrunning?

I recently saw the documentary, "The Corporation," and one section explained how common it is for corporations to engage in surreptitious advertising. For example, a guy goes into a bar and orders a certain brand of liquor and then starts talking in a loud voice about how he loves the taste. An hour later and everyone in the bar is drinking the same stuff. The movie points out that this sort of advertising is ubiquitous but impossible to detect. People that do such work are almost always required to sign confidentiality agreements, so they cannot admit what they are doing. At the same time, companies often recruit people that are engaged in the target community.

So what do you think, do we have corporate spies here on coolrunning that are engaged in surreptitious advertising? How much of this is going on? I think you would have to be extremely naive to think there is none of this. Even (or perhaps, especially) long-term posters could be involved in this sort of thing, as they would be the most effective.

Thoughts?

Paul in Okinawa
My Running Profile[/URL" target="_blank">
