I think this post might disqualify me from this elite group. But I am 50.....

Today is a beautiful fall day with record-breaking temperatures in the 70s. I think everyone is outside today.

Thought I'd put my summer running gear away but I'm glad I procrastinated!

I've been struggling with pirirformis problems for about 10 months now and today felt very good, I'm happy to report.

I'm off to have breakfast #2. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

[http://This message has been edited by survived99 (edited Oct-21-2007).|http://This message has been edited by survived99 (edited Oct-21-2007).]

And its not what you ate before the run, but what you ate yesterday and the day before.

You will also find that you have to wait a while after eating to run otherwise you may get stomach issues resulting in a rotten run.

Choose whole grain carbohydrates and lots of fruits and vegetables. White bread and sweets have a tendency to increase your sugar levels short term, but then they plunge down.

It's important to put some fat (make sure its less than 30% of total calories) and protein in the mix as well, because these foods take longer to digest and can supply calories for a longer period of time.

It's a bit of trial and errror, for sure. Have fun learning and enjoying larger quantities due to all the running. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!
Ruth

[http://This message has been edited by survived99 (edited Nov-26-2007).|http://This message has been edited by survived99 (edited Nov-26-2007).]

I can run faster and farther and non-runners freak out thinking you're nuts.

A funny story (to me at least):
Last Monday I happened to enter the elevator at work at the same time as 2 senior executives of the company I work for. The CEO said good morning then asked if I had run on the weekend. I said yes (inside voice said: duh - of course!). He says, "So, when do you stop?" I hesitated then replied "when I get tired?". <insert awkward silence>
He clarified "When do you stop running outside"
Ohhhhhhh......"Well, I don't stop running outside just because its winter." And for keeping it up.

Winter running is really trial and error. I have a pair of thick running pants for anything below freezing point. It is very very important to wear "wicking" material close to your skin.
I bought an excellent base layer turtleneck from a running store that has been an amazing piece during the winter.
I don't like wearing a cap, but ear muffs or something that keeps your ears warm is a must. Gloves are good idea too.

What helped for me during the changing seasons was using the coolrunning logs and putting in the temperature, wind, sun and what I wore and whether it worked because all of that influences how much you need to wear. I could always look back to see what I wore during certain temps and how well that worked for me.

It's great fun running in the cold but one of the most important things is that you need to come in soon after your run so that you don't get too chilled and that doesn't take very long!

Good luck and have fun!
