Be careful what you wish for around here. In 2007 our newbie support group ended up a gaggle of fifteen or twenty of my closest (now in-real-life) friends, including Lenzlaw, who hasn't quite been running this thing as long as it's been around, but a fair bit. We also accidentally became board moderators in the process. We still re-convene from all over the world every year and run MCM "together." (I say together loosely, since of course many of you folks run literally twice as fast as I do!)

Just to give you an idea of what MCM (and this message board) can do. So, welcome noobs and long-lost returnees alike (I'm looking at you, Edski)! If you need to know anything serious, about running, stretching, or life in general, ask Lenzlaw. If you need comic relief or cookies, I'm your girl.

It's occurred to me that I need to post this news here as well. Some of you long-time posters and lurkers might remember RubyPBG, one of our fellow MCMers dating back at least as far as 2007, I believe (Len, correct me if I'm wrong). In 2010, after dropping out of the race at Mile 18, Ruby was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Radiation was pretty successful, and Ruby bounced back to run the MCM Historic Half in 2011 and spectate with her husband (both in costume with awesome signs) on the Mall at MCM 2011. Sadly, there's a limit to the amount of radiation the human brain can accept, and Ruby reached that limit. Chemo had no effect, and there were no other treatment options available.

The past six months, Ruby's health had been failing her and she was ultimately bedbound. Len and I went to see her in early January, knowing we were saying goodbye. A group of MCM friends had sent her flowers that week, and they were overflowing all over the bureau opposite where her bed was raised, red and gold and her favourite stargazer lilies.

Her husband called me Thursday night of last week to tell me our Ruby died peacefully in her sleep sometime in the early morning hours of Thursday, 28 February, 2013.

Bravo zulu, Ruby. A race well run. We will always remember you, your encouragement, your laugh, your infectious energy, and above all your boundless love.

Me too on "as ready as I'm going to be." This isn't going to break any records. Haven't run since getting back from Boulder--I immediately got the Trapped On An Airplane With You People plague. Fortunately I've been able to fend off the worst of it. I feel pretty ok. That's the good news. The bad news is, the congestion is all in my throat and upper chest. I've got no voice to speak of (or with) and am starting to think about developing a cough. NOT OK. Drinking Jack Daniels with lemon and honey as I type.

This weekend is the Runner's World Half Marathon and Running Festival here in town. I'm seriously bummed. I was supposed to run at least the 10k, had maybe considered the half for about ten seconds before I talked sense into myself. Didn't, given my current plague. Did, however, get to hang out downtown with Bart Yasso (who lives more or less down the street from me and grew up LITERALLY down the block from my apartment) and hear Matt Long speak. That was fairly epic.

DEADLINE for DEFERMENT to 2013 is TONIGHT!

Sunday, September 30 at midnight (presumably EDT, but don't quote me on that) is the deadline for deferring your registration to the MCM until next year.

(as an added bonus, I will not be deferring, something I didn't decide until after today's run.)

After two ghastly attempts, had my first really decent three mile run after surgery.

It's going to be an interesting October.
