You'll enjoy the running opportunities around here. Would you be in the honors college or regular admissions? If you have any questions about IUP, talk to me.
Re: training for first marathon

to be honest, you need more miles. strength training is effective if done at least twice a week, so I'd say cut it down to twice /wk and go for another run. with that said, adding a little leg strength training might not be a bad idea either. if you run where there are hills, you'll probably notice a quad/hamstring imbalance (quads generally work more than your hamstrings).

yes, your training could be more effective. what is the longest distance you've raced so far, and what was your time? remember, there are a lot of people out there who for the life of them won't be able to run a sub-3 marathon. is your goal realistic? how much are you really willing to do for this race? so far it sounds more like you're in the "hey, this sounds neat. i think i'll try it" mode. i'm sure you've heard it before, but a marathon is a pretty big undertaking.

edited to note that what I said probably came off pretty strong, and I didn't really mean it that way. Training properly for a marathon just has a lot of things that you need to pay attention to and be weary of.

[http://This message has been edited by unenlightend (edited Jun-03-2005).|http://This message has been edited by unenlightend (edited Jun-03-2005).]

"No!" in a loud, forceful voice almost always works well. if the dog is on a rampage and seems intent on mauling you, defend yourself - sticks, stones, or swift kicks - whatever it takes. walk until a comfortable distance from the dog, then start running again. as you're walking away and starting to run again, glance back once in a while to make sure the dog isn't following you.

But for me it occurs even after a typical bout of exercise at normal intensity. I've lived at this elevation for a while, so it's not that. Maybe something to do with blood glucose levels? If it's glucose though, would that affect me while running instead of mostly just afterward?
