I tried to do something similiar and I lost some quickness and ended up suffering an ankle injury. Up your calorie intake for sure, but do some lifiting with light weight but more reps. I like to shoot before lifitng and getting my blood flowing before I hit the weight room, recommend you try that. Good luck in your season, Scott

Okay, Luis, speaking from an older player like me and one who has coached players, Coaches like to see that you are coachable, can work within a team concept and will sacrifice for the good of the team. Having versatility and being able to play multiple positions is a plus. Show the coaches the strengths of your game while in private, you work on your weaknessess. For me when I was in high school, I was a better than average offensive player but I lacked quickness as a defender. I worked on my footwork and became a solid defender, often being asked to guard the other team's best perimeter player in my junior year. Furthermore, being unselfish (by all means, take your shot when you're open and in rhythm), playing good defense, hustling and fighting for rebounds will make a good impression. My proudest acheivement in basketball is when my coach in my sophomore season gave me the "Team Before Self" award. I have tried to instill the same concept in my young son who is 5 and is just learning the game. Mold your game to the concept of whatever team you play on and ask yourself, 'What can I do to make this the team better?" Sometimes your team may need you to score, other times to be a willing passer or to guard someone who may be a bad matchup for you because other players are in foul trouble, etc. Keep that in mind and I am sure you will make a lasting impression on your coaches..Good Luck, Scott

I agree with Randy. In my sophomore year at High school, our coaches made us learn the FLEX offense (Like Boston College runs) during tryouts! They wanted to see if we could pick it up and work within a team concept. I recommend getting together with some guys and running through it together on your own. If the coaches will not draw it out for you, then while you are on the side watching, bring a small notebook and start drawing it out yourself or take some notes to help you while you work on your own. Hope this helps! Scott

Re: I can take the ball to the cup like there's nothin' to it, but i get the ball knocked out or stuffed way to many times. Advice?!

Hey ToughD..here's some advice from an older player (with high school/college experience) who doesn't have the greatest vertical leap..

Not sure how tall you are but is apparent that you're a great ball-handler. When you're sizing up a defender for a drive to the hoop, fancy dribbling isn't always the best option. A quick, decisive move will often get the step you need to beat a defender to the rim. Also, use your body to protect the ball and don't expose the ball to a shot blocker until you have to. Max makes a good point about pump/shot fakes. You want get that defender to overcommit somehow and take advantage of his eagerness. My favorite move is a hard hesitation dribble to the left and then step-back for a jumper, but I am more of a jumpshooter than a slasher. Also use the rim (reverse layups) to help ward off other defenders rotating to stop you after you have beaten your man. Also, getting stronger in the upper body will help as well. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask more questions
