Hi, I am thinking on doing my first race. Its a local 20mi Criterium. I feel good and my engine and lungs are strong. But this being my first race I dont have an all out expensive road bike yet.

I will be racing with a stock '08 Trek 7.3 FX Link to my bike

My question is... If two ppl with the same physical strength and endurance race against each other, one of them with a $2,000 carbon fiber road bike and the other with my trek, how much of a difference could there be? Will the road bike finish 5 miles ahead of the Trek FX or could it possibly be a close race?

I know aero dynamics are a big deal in racing, but this is a 0.8 mi loop criterium with many 90 degree turns, so I dont think we will getting up to a speed fast enough where aerodynamics are a big deal.

What do you guys think?

Also, will people just flat out laugh at me with my hairy legs and hybrid bike when I pull up to the starting line? I dont care if they do but all the cyclists that I have met so far are kind of snoody. I wouldnt mind beating a few of them with several thousand dollars more in gear.

Thanks

Re: What is training too fast doing to my body?

IMHO,
First of all, if you are running too fast everyday and you are not feeling overtrained and/or getting injured then you may not be running too fast. Maybe you are racing too slow and the McMillian calculator makes you think you are running too fast based on your slow race time.

But to answer your question about what you are doing physiologically by running all your workouts too fast...

Your recovery efficiency will probably be lowered. Which means all the fast running is slowing your progress. You need easy runs to loosen you up and increase blood flow to your muscles so they can repair and replenish. But you have to run slow enough to not create more microscopic tears or deplete muscle nutrients further.
You may be strong enough or stubborn enough to handle running fast all the time, but if you want to become the fastest that you can be, you need to balance your running.

If you like to run fast, then run fast. Do a speed workout and a tempo run everyweek (take a whole easy week every so often) but run easy on the other days of the week. Of course you need a good ol fashioned long run. I like to run those fast sometimes !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|border=0!
But yes, don't write checks your physiology can't cash. You will have to pay the injury man eventually if you do!

We need a forum that highlights this important running related subject! There are hundreds of great core exercises (and other strengthening/stretching routines for other body parts) out there and I know that many of you running vets have good ideas to share so lets create a new forum dedicated to strength training and flexability ideas!

Thank you and Go Cowboys!
