Hi!! I am a distance runner and just recently diagnosed w/ possible labral tear of my left hip and have been seeking other alternatives for treatment. I am wondering if anyone out there has ever done laser therapy. I have been receiving treatments from a chiropractor and feeling great lately! From what I know, there are not a lot of chiropractors doing this as it is hard to get insurance companies to pick up the cost on it so ends up being an out of cost payment. But, this treatment is suppose to regenerate tissue and promote better blood supply to the joint and has been touted to heal labral tears depending on severity and with apropriate rest, etc!! I was doing cross training and felt a deep pinch during a heavy low squat and did not take appropriate rest but instead ran the next day and it just progressively got worse over time leading me to seek chiropractic tx which didn't seem to help much so sought opinion of a bone and joint dr who did an xray which lead to finding out that I have moderate hip dysplasia. Then got an MRI which revealed possible labral tear. The bone and joint dr seems to be heavily leaning towards surgery as he is suggesting that I go see a specialist and find out about open hip surgery or arthroscopy. Since he only performs closed, he referred me to a specialist who does open. He is suggesting cortisone injections then PT before trying to get qualified for this surgery as insurance will not cover these costs until you can prove that you have tried other measures. But, in short, I plan to still run and not wanting to look into surgery as I am only 38 and don't want to be opened up and have such an invasive procedure. I do not have any pain only dull aching pain felt in hip socket w/ marked pain only in deep squat or internal rotation but has been getting progressively better w/ range of motion and aching pain since doing this laser therapy and laying off any high impact exercises. My pain feels like a tightness or pinching in my hip socket that radiates to my knee but very tolerable. Just curious if any other runners out there have done laser therapy?

Hello everyone,

I'm 21 years old and I am in my 5th week of crutches after my intervention. First off, thanks for all the tips that I leanrt reading these posts, it's defentely very instructive and it feels good to know we are not alone. I had my operation after two years of pain in the right hip apparently due to kick boxing, unfortunetly I had no other solution but painkillers to get over the pain. (even yoga didn't work).

I am actually just asking for rehabilitation tips to those of you who are experienced in the subject, I see some of you already had several similar interventions. Like what exercise are the best? How to control the pain?

I'll admitt that right now, more than the pain is the fact that I'm just really scared, and anxious on how I'm going to be, if I'll recover fast, completly... (If you have advice on that too, all is welcome!)

The thing is that I can feel i am way better, I swim a lot and I can feel my leg well, feel the pain slowly moving away, but when I bring my knee towards the inside, there is still a point where it stings, and now I wonder if that's ever gonna go away, that's what scares me!

Finally, if I can give an advice to the people that might be reading this, that have this pain but haven't gotten an operation yet, don't make it worse!!! by continuing sports like I did pretending it's going to go away, go see a surgeon and follow his steps carefully. For example mine advised me 6 months of "physio" (I'm from switzerland I don't know how you call them in the states maybe something like "karopracter") to see if the pain can go away naturally, then go for an operation. Bottom line is do it quick and don't hesitate to get surgery, i wish I went earlier.

Good luck to all of you!!!

Hi FPL310-

Yeah that sounds like the routine they do for FAI / Labrum Tear. What doctor suggested all that? Did you go see Dr. Kramer?

Any surgery is always a concern right but I think the shaving down the Head of the Hip bone is standard. A while ago when I thought I had this I read that something like 8 or 9 out of 10 people have growth on their hip like that. So I think shaving it down to fit properly will probably take it back to being normal. It's like the Big Round peg don't fit in the small round hole. But of course the doctor can answer that better.

Are you in Southern Cal?

If you haven't gone to see Dr. Kramer you should. As I mentioned he works on alot of professional athletes and he's the Team Doctor for the World Surfing Tour... And I'm sure you know who Kelly Slater is almost everyone does... he's pretty much the Michael Jordan of surfing and has 10 world titles. Dr. Kramer is a hip specialist and Kelly had the Labrum / FAI procedure from Dr. Kramer about 7 or 8 years ago and after that went on to win several more world titles and he's still winning world titles at about age 40. So you will be in Great Hands with Dr. Kramer. You obviously sound like a kick *** athlete and when you go into his exam rooms and the hallways you will see a ton of pictures of extreme athletes from surfers, skateboarders, motorcross pros on the walls thanking Dr. Kramer. And these pros, when they wipeout, man do they hit so hard they can really break apart. I'm a really athletic guy too so I appreciate seeing the Wall of Fame Pictures of all those pros giving their testimonials. So I was impressed by his Wall of Fame and being your a 6'0 - 200lbs Powerlifter, they will like you... I mean NOT many 6'0 200lb powerlifter girls walking around... I'm sure you'll be on their Wall of Fame too, haha.

As for me, I just had Sports Hernia Surgery about 1 month ago. Healing slowly... I was healing and feeling great until 2 weeks post-op when I had to pick up my mom from the airport and like a total MORON I just instinctively lifted her big suitcase into my car to help her and soon after I hurt really bad for almost 10 days and thought I ripped open surgery. But it's been feeling better so maybe I will be ok. I sure HOPE.

But the reason why I bring up my surgery is I was misdiagnosed for about 4 years from Hernia Doctors even Dr. Kramer. But to justify Dr. Kramer and don't blame his for not knowing, a Sports Hernia is NOT in his wheelhouse. And he recommended me to go see a Hernia Specialst who got it wrong too, haha. But a Sports Hernia is tricky to find and it does NOT show up on MRI's or X-rays so you have to find a very experienced Sports Hernia doctor and there are very few of them. I ended up flying up to San Jose to get it done by a really good specialist.

However I kept hoping it would go away and over the 4 years I think I damaged other parts of my body from the OverCompensation. I would give anything to go back in time and get the surgery right away. Sports Hernias do NOT heal on their own. They are NOT the same as a regular hernia and much more complicated. It's not even hernia it's more like a groin tear but they call it a sports hernia, kind of a misnomer. But now that I'm in recovery I just hope all the other problems I have from waiting so long... I hope I didn't wait too long and the new issues I have go away. So in your case too, I wouldn't wait too long. My problem was I kept going to Hernia doctors who kept telling me they didn't think I had a sports hernia and probably had a really bad strain and it would go away on it own. WRONG and I'm kind of mad at the world about it because from Day 1 when the pain really started happening 4 years ago and after doing research I concluded I had a Sports Hernia and I told every doctor I went to and they kept saying no they didn't think I had that.

Well it turns out they were All WRONG and it cost me 4 years and alot more pain issues developed in the past 18 months. Its kind of like when you have something wrong with your car and the mechanic says get it fixed or you could have alot more problems but you still do NOT get it fixed. Then like a year later it leads to like 9 more things breaking down and a HUGE BILL and you think damn IF I just fixed that first problem 9 months none of this other stuff would have broken. So after my experience if you need surgery, get it sooner than later.

Oh yeah, how did that Stem Cell Therapy go?? That sounds interesting.

Take Care

Thanks for the info on Dr. Kramer! I'd put this out of my mind as I had a healer / chiropractor adjust my hip (frightening!) and it got much better / quit catcing / no pain... then I trained a boot camp class yesterday, did too much, and started researching this again... then I got notifications from this site... well it IS a full moon tonight. =)

Yes it is FAI and torn Labrum, also lacking enough cartillage. So they want to reshape the acetabular head, suture down the labrum, then do microfracturing to create more cartillage and the doc I saw wanted to reshape the head of the bone to fit better - the latter part was what put me at a screetching halt. I'm a 6' 200 lb girl, and something tells me making a hip bone thinner, no matter how it might help now, is gonna equal a broken hip later. Plus I'm an equestrian now, and having been as strong as I have been, don't really want to second guess G-d on the bone thickness thing.

The more I research the more it seems that the surgery is so new that there isn't much long term data for us to review. I just don't know, my doubts still outweigh any benefits. But then again, I limped for a second yesterday and woke up in a load of pain this morning... sigh.
