Well folks! If you haven't started listening to Nick you are heading down the wrong road.

I met Nick a few months ago on the LHR thread in Basic Training. After reading thirty somes pages of the thread, all the supplemental information I could find and ordering two books online I gave the approach a try.

Three miles was forever a barrier for me until that day. I have not been perfect with my heart rate monitor. I have seen a few days where I got frustrated and just ran comfortably, darn the heart rate. But today, in the rain, 80 degrees and 87% humidity, I went six miles.

That's right, SIX MILES!! A goal I have set for myself was a half marathon. Not because I need to do it, but because I want to do it. Thanks to Nick, Jesse, Jim and all the other regular posters in the ow heart rate thread I am well on my way to training for my goal of that Half!

Listen carefully, apply the principles and run slower than you have ever thought you could. It will work for you if you let it...

Peace...

Kent

----

"One foot in front of the other"
ME[/URL" target="_blank">

Maybe I'll go back to taking our dogs when I walk. They throw my stride off too much for running, but I can handle them when I walk. I have been doing C25K<del>with a few weeks off for traveling and a couple weeks repeated</del>since mid-July (I'm finishing W7). Shin splints have been my biggest problem any time I've tried to run in the past, and I now know that was from trying to do too much too fast; I haven't had much problem at all with them as I've followed this program. My legs are pleasantly tired, but not sore, at the end of the 25-minute runs. On my "off" days I usually walk, but are there reasons I shouldn't add some "slogging" if I feel like it?

Thanks for sharing your insights & experiences with us!

I am a firm believer in gentle walking as a wonderful activity. I think walking is especially beneficial for folks getting into running. On your run days it is not a bad idea to run some/walk some<del>even before you are tired or think you need to walk. On your non- running days do some gentle walking. A basic Law of Physics goes something like this: a body in motion tends to stay in motion</del>-a body at rest tends to stay at rest. Stay in motion.

I currently run 50-60 miles a week. I also walk 10+ miles a week. I have found that the walking has improved my running<del>I am less stiff and just feel better. Maybe some of that is walking with our ADHD Minature Schnauzer</del>since we got her about 3 yrs ago. We also do some running. In the heat/hummidity in FL we do 1 mile or so. When it gets "cold" we run<del>well she walks</del>I run<del>3-5 miles.<br /><br />YEOW! Sorry I got off point</del>I'd blame it on my age<del>but I have always talked too much. Adding days of running</del>start by adding days of just walking<del>gentle walking</del>not speed walking/not power walking. Gentle walking. Take your time build up gradually. You will be surprised how the additional time on your feet out walking will help your running<del>and more importantly will help your psyche. Again, if you are in this for the rest of your life</del>what is the hurry? Nick

I'm about half way through my C25K program and I was reading all the threads about LHR training so I decided to get a HRM and try it out on my run yesterday.

I was shocked at how slow I had to go to keep my HR under 144.

Here's my question<del>do you suggest that people do this LHR training at this early of a stage in their program or is it something that I should wait for until I'm getting more MPW?</b><HR></BLOCKQUOTE><br /><br />OK. A heart rate monitor can be a good thing. Most folks run too fast/hard before they have built up a good aerobic base. One must be careful what number people select for their training heart rate. The old formula 220- your age is valid for about 1/3 of the population. Maffetone's formula of 180- your age may get a little closer. I strongly suggest you read the thread entitled base building in the Basic Training Forum. Under the post's initiator</del>Jesse Leitner<del>there is several things to read and digest. There is a lot of stuff to read.<br /><br />Regardless of a hr monitor or not</del>if you will walk a little/run a little<del>laugh</del>have fun and decide to become a lifetime runner--there won't be as much of a hurry. If you are taking your time your heart rate will probably be pretty close to where it should be for EZ running. Let me know what you think of the stuff in the thread I mentioned.
