The good news is that three weeks did not do too much damage and you certainly do not need to worry about going back to square one. Maybe there was a slight decline in overall fitness that began after a few weeks, but we are blessed with "muscle memory", so to speak, so cardio levels decrease faster than strength and most likely you can adjust right back into your regular training routine (maybe a bit scaled back initially, but it will all return quickly).

Sounds like you are young and already had a good base, so that means that you can regain all your levels in a more expedient manner than most.

Finally, try not to blame yourself for the momentary lapse...we all have times where our goals are sidelined for one reason or another. Running everyday is difficult and sometimes a break is actually healthy (physically and mentally), so perhaps you avoided injury, needed the time to re-adjust or dodged total burnout. Just look at the situation as a positive rest period to focus on the future.

Your performance and confidence will be right back on schedule sooner than you think, so be proud that your past hard work will allow you a speedy return and continued success.

Wishing you all the best.

For the past year I have been running almost every day, as I am part of a cross-country and track team. I had worked hard and stayed consistant, my 2-mile time went from roughly 14 minutes to 10:24. We're already a good way into the summer and recently I had done nothing but sitting and playing my computer all day long, this bad lifestyle went on for three weeks. I snapped out of it and started running again, but I am worried about how this behavior effected my running for this up-coming season. I know that my fitness can suffer from not running for periods of time, but not only did I stop running I barely did any activity at all. My knee pains have faded after afew runs, but I feel much weaker than before. Does anyone know how much my cardiovasculer fitness has decreased, and what those three weeks did to my muscle? How long will it take to rebuild my old strength? Thank you for reading my whole rant and I would be very appreciative if you can answer anyone of these questions.
