People with ipods are as annoying and oblivious as people who walk around on their cellphones..

I just think IPODS are a total distraction noit just from running, but from ones surroundings...

Bleh.....what's your point? I can run 20+ miles with music, or without. What the hell does music have to do with being aware of your surroundings? I run on a greenway on the weekends, and although I may be listening to music, I'm still more aware of what is going on than 90% of the people there. People letting their dogs take up the entire path, people walking on the wrong side, people yapping on their cell phones, people letting their 32310 kids on training wheels flail around unsupervised. The list goes on and on.

I see oblivious people when I'm driving my car every day....I see them shopping....they are constantly in my way when I try to buy groceries.

Get the point?

It's not about music players...it's about people. They are generally oblivious of their surroundings, much less anyone else that might be interacting or wanting to use said surroundings.

I sometimes use an ipod while running. Haven't raced yet but I know I'll have it with me during the marathon. I will use it in areas with no crowd cheering us on and the dull areas. (My DH has run it before; he rarely uses an ipod but was wshing he had it each time he got through these parts.)

I am curious however. Everyone dead set against ipods, do you talk on your cell phone while driving? Or worse, text while driving? Change a CD? Turn up the volume to a favorite song? I want you all to concentrate on the task at hand: DRIVING. All your concentration should be focused on what you are doing, DRIVING. I've seen drivers on cell phones nearly clip runners because they were oblivious. I have seen cell phone drivers swerve on the roads because they were oblivious. I think cell phones while driving are a total distraction not just from driving but from your surroundings. If a driver craves his/her cell phone, he/she should PULL OVER AND PARK!

Until then, I will use my ipod on pathways with a lot of space between me and cars. I will continue running with my ipod with the earbuds stuck on the top outside part of my ear and turned up just loud enough for me to hear the music and everything else around me. You don't have to turn the volume all the way to the top.

Theres a difference between talking on the phone (which requires concentration and response to another person) while driving a 3000lb missile and having music in the background while you run.

I didn't equate them. He did. He is grouping together millions of ppl based on his limited experience. I was simply pointing out the danger in doing so. The comparison, which is not an equation, is relevant.

I run with music. Rather, I run with one headphone at low volume. You can't tell me that I'm not 100% aware of my surroundings because, quite frankly, you're not me.

Case in point- I was tailed by someone during a race last weekend. He was constantly in my blindspot, speeding up and slowing down with me, always within about 3 feet. How did I know this? I could hear his breathing. That's annoying. That's distracting. But it's part of the race experience. (And had either the race webpage or signup sheet asked me to specifically leave my iPod at home, I would have.)

But then an ambulance came through, so ran into its path and came to a dead stop. Stupid I-PODS!!!11

I wasn't thinking nazism at all. You brought that up, not me. Actually, I was thinking of the South in this country and segregation. Regardless, the point stands. You're grouping an entire class of users/ppl together (millions of ppl by the way). Lumping ppl together as you do is the mark of someone that lacks logic, which by the way Dems & Repubs share in equal numbers.

Were you burned by an ipod's malfunctioning battery as a child?

What was the setting? Was it during a race? If so, what were you doing standing still on the course? If you're going to tell us that the runner ran off the course then that would more credibly be a problem with vision, not hearing. Or was it in a pre-race crowd? If so, this has nothing to do with running while listening to music. Vision governs far more of our spatial awareness than hearing.

This, again, has very little to do with hearing and more with vision. If you're running against traffic, as is safest, then your vision should give you plenty of warning of oncoming traffic.
