Happy Birthday (1889) to Hannes Kolehmainen, a New York bricklayer and National Guardsman who did not receive US Citizenship until 1921. He may be the only US resident to have won an Olympic 10,000 meter cross country run gold medal, doing so in 1912 at the Stockholm Olympics as a representative of his native Finland. Finland at the time was not recognized as independent, and the Russian national anthem was played at the awards ceremony, leading him to say that he almost wished he had not won.

November 16, 1753 is the birthday of James McHenry, surgeon in the Continental Army, signer of the US Costitution from Maryland, and namesake for Fort McHenry, whose colors flying through the night during British naval bombardment during the War of 1812 inspired the writing of the Star Spangled Banner. Happy Birthday(1729) to Louis-Antoine, Comte de Bougainville, leader in the first French expedition to circumnavigate the world (in the process lending his name to an island well known to Marines in the South Pacific in WW2 and having the first known woman to circumnavigate the world among his crew_ She was in disguise at first), serving with the French forces defeating the British in the Battle of the Chesapeake during the American Revolution, and author of a work on calculus.......
