Kukri - I don't see any reason why you can't run this week. Unless sickness is affecting your breathing, I don't see the harm. (Of course, what do I know? I'm a demographer!) You certainly have had some setbacks this training cycle, but I love how you continue to stick with it.

This morning was day two of HH Intermediate Half Marathon training plan. I don't have a solid enough base any longer to do my FIRST program, so I'm using the HH (more or less). This was a three mile run at no clearly determined pace, so I just went out and ran. I went out much faster than I'd intended, turning in an 8:00 min mile -- not quite the way I planned to warm up! The other two miles were at a much more sensible pace, so I ended up putting in 3.12 miles in 26:00 even. No complaints.

Yesterday called for stretching and strengthening, so I pulled out the X-Stretch video from P90X. That was about 57 minutes of stretching, and there's a fair bit of hamstring stretching (ouch!). Overall, it was really excellent and I felt really good after I was done. I also did a bunch of pushups (I'm re-starting the hundred pushups program using a modified schedule). I think last night's stretching provided a real benefit to this morning's run; it felt great getting out there!

Well, off to take a shower and head to work. Have an excellent day, folks!

Don

Your half will still be great, even if you don't hit your original time goal. It's just a super experience. Glad you're sticking with it.

Just a quick check-in for me today. My content filter is set to kick in at 8:30am, so I need to type fast.

Did a bunch of stuff last week, including an hour of racquetball on Thursday and a short run right after that (1.25 miles). I took a couple of days off, then nailed a 7-miler yesterday with (mostly) negative splits. Average pace for the run was about 8:56min/mile, so I'm very pleased. I'm getting there!

I hope you're all having a great start-of-the week.

Don

being eaten by bugs... guilted self into doing this after just being lazy all week)

14 August 3.11 slow easy miles (no real reason for having waited a week and only 3 miles 'cause that's all I had time for before work because I barely got out of bed in time to run at all)

18 August 3 slow easy miles (before work, intended to run at least 6 but couldn't be bothered to roll out of bed early enough)

24 August 1.4 miles (no reason for the week of not running other than continued laziness about running and being seduced by a bicycle... was intending to do 10mile long run then put off from Sunday -note the 24th was monday- when I figured I needed at least one more long run before the half marathon and the weekend was more or less my last chance 'cause Sunday of laborday weekend is the race- but had catastrophic costume failure: noticed my thigh stinging somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile in so stopped just short of a full lap, stopping at the parking lot, & discovered the seam inside my right thigh just under my crotch had split creating a small-ish hole through which my compression shorts forced a bit of skin which was then sadly abused by the seam on the inside of my other thigh)

26 August 10 slow easy miles (in a different pair of shorts with body glide over the still-red patch of abraided skin on inner thigh)

so that's today: 10miles 1:49:10 so right around an 11 minute mile pace

the good: I did get in a last long run & it was easy enough- sore(still injured?) hamstring about equally (pretty mildly) sore at the beginning and the end

the

bad: I am no longer expecting to run the race in about 2:10 with a

secret hope to make it in under 2hours I am now more expecting to run

it in 2:30 with a-not-so-secret hope of making it in 2:15 ...I'm

wondering if I should switch starting corrals (when I signed up gave a

then-thought-to-be-conservative estimate of finishing in 2:15) to

reflect the likelihood of 2:25 given I want to start at a comfortable

12+ minute pace and increase or not as feels comfortable with the real

goal being feel good and run the whole thing

tentative plan is

now another 6miles Friday morning & Monday morning & Wednesday

morning (with biking tomorrow, & Sunday) and then... nothing? from

Wednesday next week til the race that Sunday? or an easy 3miles on

Thursday or Friday?

something like that

& despite having planned two 12 mile runs and two 11 mile runs when I was making up a training schedule for myself I still won't have run further than 10miles before tackling 13.1 at the race

Val - It was a pleasure to speak with Jamie about my experience. He seems like a really good guy.

Angie - Great to hear from you again. Hang in there. I know it's tough, but your son will grow so much while he's away at school.

Nico - Don't downplay those two and three mile runs. As they say, nickels and dimes add up!

Lynn - I know what you mean about your cat. We're coming up on the two year anniversary of my rabbit's death. I still sometimes call our current rabbit Clyde (her name is Smokey). We sure do let those critters into our hearts.

Tonight I went out for my longest run since surgery. I had three miles on the schedule, but I had it in my head to go for at least four. I was aiming for a 9:30 pace, but I ended up with a 9:09 (or 9:11, depending on whether you believe Garmin or RunningAhead) average pace. It wasn't that hard, but I don't know that I could have gone much farther. It was a slightly-warm 75°F, but the humidity was a very managable 56%. It felt great!

This was also my first run in my new kicks. I decided to change shoes to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 (I've been running in either the New Balance 768 or Saucony Hurricaine Pro Grid 10). I've wanted to get into the Brooks products ever since I heard about their biodegradable midsoles. I finally pulled the trigger this week. They're very comfortable and feel lighter than the NB or Saucony. Very nice so far.

I'm working my way into a half-marathon training program in preparation for Philly in November. Looks like it'll be a tweaked version of the Hal Higdon Intermediate Half-Marathon training program. I'm psyched!

I hope you're all well. We're still missing some folks. Haven't heard from kukri or Michael in a while....

Have a great night!

Don

Then the flight attendant appeared and asked if I would switch with some kid in the front so he could sit with his mom. Sure, okay. But as I walked to the front of the plane, you could see all these people staring at me and thinking "wow, that lady REALLY DID NOT want to switch seats".

One lady said to me recently "oh honey, you cry when they move back in!" which I think is funny.

It is way too hot here, too. Yesterday's 8:30 am run was 90 degrees. I didn't realize how hot until I got a ways out. I do not like running in the heat. 50 would be optimum for me!

I cried when my oldest son went into the Air Force. I was worried about him because he didn't take being ordered around well. He did okay, after he stopped trying to run away from boot camp and luckily, he went in just after the first Gulf war and got out just before 9/11 and didn't get recalled.

My second son went to Drexel in Philadelphia which wasn't too far away and was a quick train ride home. He was my only "boomerang" and that was about 2 years after he graduated from college. I didn't have a problem because he was the good kid (not that my other children were bad kids - he was just the easy one.) My daughers never went away to college - they both went locally and then got married. Speaking of daughers, my oldest twin is expecting her second in January - it looks like it's a girl. Just found out today. My younger son and his wife are expecting their first in September - a boy. In total that will make 7 - three girls and 4 boys.

I didn't get out at all last week - way too hot. I didn't run the 5k on Saturday either - it was pouring down rain and hot on top of that, plus I had 5 stitches in my pointy finger after a bought of stupidy with a mandolin (vegetable slicer) and didn't want to have to fool with keeping it dry. I walked 2.65 miles on Sunday and about 2.3 miles yesterday. ...and you all run faster than me on my best days.

I've finally stopped crying about my poor kitty, but I still "see" her out of the corner of my eye every now and then and when I look it's just a pile of black socks or something else.
