I've run barefoot for two years now. It is indeed something you practice. One's technique changes since one lands on the forefoot and not the heel. Google Chi Running or the Pose Method for basics of the technique. The important thing is to start slowlyrun or walk on grass just to get a feel for being barefoot and then run on, say, a smooth sidewalk for a few minutes. Not too much at first because not only will your feet be sore, but your ankles and calves will as well. Give yourself time to allow your feet to get toughened uphave fun, too! I found that after a week or two I was able to run 3-4 miles comfortably. From there I simply ran barefoot more and more and gradually ditched my shoes. Listen to your body, don't do too much, and have fun. It's not exactly rocket science.

Hmm.....running with one shoe on and one shoe off, that can't feel good on the knees/hips/rest of the body.

There is actually a rule which states: "A competitor may compete in bare feet or with footwear on one or both feet." So bare feet, no problem.
