It's not for everyone but it seems to be helping me prevent injuries. I gave up running before because of hip pain and have had no such problems this time.I recently got a yoga for abs video and it's great!

I've read recently about how much core exercises will help, especially if you have back problems. I think any type of weight lifting will be a benefit. Have you talked to a trainer?

I have started and stopped this C25K program so many times it makes me sick, but I have started again. I had back surgery 6 years ago and it seems when I get in the 4-5th week, I get a flare up in my back and can't do anything short of holding down the couch. In the past, I tried to run everyday, so this time, being that I'm 41 and prone to injuries, I will run every other day. I have put on 50lbs since my back surgery (crept on <10lbs a yr), and I want to get it off, and I want to remain healthy. Many of my friends have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and/or diabetes, and I don't want to have those issues. Being heavy is also a stuggle when trying to run. It's not easy hauling this trunk around, but by gosh, I do my best.

One thing I do to pass the time when I run is I run in different places. If I run near where I live, I try to take different routes. If I have time, like on the weekends, I go to a different neighborhood, usually near the beach, so I can look at big houses and beautiful yards. It definitely helps pass the time. I usually will linger for a long walk after I finish my run and just enjoy the scenery. I think it helps me acclimate to the heat as well.

I have a question: for those of you running every other day, are you doing any form of exercise the days you don't run. I feel like I should exercise everyday (cycle, gym, walk), but I don't know if this attributes to my injuries. Thoughts or ideas?

I ran my third 5K today. Once again it was cold and sprinkled, but didn't rain hard. I had a friend in the race with me this time. She runs faster than me so I was constantly trying to keep up. I really got tired out and had to do some walking. Then I would try to catch up to her again. With all of her encouragement and running faster than I have been doing on my own my time was a little over 32 minutes. That is the best I've ever done. That is about two minutes faster than I ran two weeks ago. I came in first in my age group today. Don't get too excited, I was the only one in my age group. I took the medal anyway. I have no shame. Keep running.

Karen

We'll see how much the advil loves me.... Other than that I'm feeling much more prepared to run than I was last July when 3 miles was not do-able. My time then was 39:40 or so w/ walking or running.

Nice job, elibry! I did a 5K today, too. My time was 31:58. On Wednesday I did 3 miles in 29:07 on a route I'm familiar with that's not too hilly. I find that when I do a new route I go slower because I'm not sure how to pace myself for what's coming up. The race route had some good hills on it and was a bit windy. I spoke to a woman I know- a regular runner- who said her typical 5K is about 24 minutes and today her time was about 25:30 so I wasn't feeling too bad about my time. I got a major boost when another woman finished shortly after me and she said, "You had a great pace! I followed you the whole time!"

So, I guess with races ask around and see how others did compared to their regular or fast run time. It might give you a better perspective on how you did. I'm also finding races to be so fun for the camraderie. Whether you're fast or slow people are cheering you on and happy you're there. Around here everyone applaudes your effort!
