I was aiming for 25:00 and came in at 26:44. I did get my wife and son to enter also, and they want to continue to run with me in these races. So that is a real plus. We all came away with medals for our age groups, and I came in at 17th place overall. I am happy with that. I'll run again next month. Sorry about the headache.

I just signed up for what will be my third 5K. I have finally gotten my wife and son to sign up with me so we can do this together. I hope this turns into a great family fitness thing. I have 4 daughters as well, but they are all grown and gone. One is in my profile picture. That is from my oldest daughters wedding reception. I miss my girls, but I am looking forward to doing things like this with my son, who is more athletic.

Anyway, I enjoy hearing how everyone is doing. It seems like a lot of people are achieving goals, and building confidence. I think that is all really good. I know I am feeling good about myself at this point. So please keep posting. This is really enjoyable.

Good morning everyone,

Well I did it. I completed my first 5k. Wow!!! I can not believe that I did it and I did it without walking. I am so very proud of myself right now. I had a goal of finishing under 35 minutes and I beat that. My time was 34:08. Hooray for me. I did the susan g komen race for the cure in grand rapids and there were 6500 people in it. The energy there was intense, so many people all cheering each other on. I really didn't notice the hills because there were so many people I could not see them to dwell on them. All I have to say is WOW. I had been dodging a cold for the two days prior to the race so I was worried about how it was going to affect me. But, I prevailed!!! Ended up with what I am thinking is a migraine after the race (had some vision problems and then was wiped out) could of been a combo cold and physical exertion. Either way I am doing better today.

I can't wait to see how your race went Snowman....weather looked like it cooperated for you.

Happy Trails

SNOWMAN: I went to a training lecture several years ago given by an Olympics track coach. He said that we need to compensate for the type slanted surface caused by the high crown that you mention. He advised us for any long distance run (his definition of LD was males = 4 miles/-, females = 2 miles/-. He said that our body hip/knee/ankle alignment is designed for a flat surface and if we always run on a flat surface given that we don't have flat feet or another local misalignment or worse yet a systemic problem, we can run for years with very little trouble. Running being linear our skeletal-muscular system loves an even surface.

The coach's advice was to avoid running on a slanted surface over his LD gender limits of 4M, 2F at a stretch and move up to the crown. He also advised that moving to the opposite side of the road where you are running out of balance putting added pressure on the other hip/leg feels good at first but he said this should be avoided because it just doubles the chance for injury. The injury can be expressd in the spine, back, hip, knee, ankle and involve joints, tendons, muscles, nerves - not a good outcome!

LEN

PS: The shorter recommended distance for females has nothing to do with a "weaker sex" tag but mother nature's physiological design. Anyway, we all know that women are better endurance runners than men. Thankfully we long ago put the weaker sex misconceptions to rest.

Michelle if you are a turtle next to some of these guys I am definetly a snail...:) I just looked at the race results from last year for the race I am doing on Saturday and it looks I will be in the top 500 in the race.
