My 3.5 year old was just invited to pre-team last week (team here starts at level 4)! She is SO excited!!! She cannot be 'on' the team until she is 6 but she should definitely be ready for it when she does turn 6.

Galewind ~ CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Katie ~ Great job on your 5K and great time!!!!

Jay ~ You're doing awesome!! I ended up making up my own plan instead of following one. But I really do like the looks of the Hal Higdon 1/2 plan! Glad it's working for you!

Coreena ~ How did the race go?? The 1/2 in January sounds like a great goal!!

Hope everyone's doing great!!!

Welp - My first 5k is this coming Saturday! Woot! Right after that, I'll be starting Jeff Galloway's 1/2 marathon training plan. I attempted a 4 mile run on Saturday, just to make sure I'd be in great shape for the 5k and I DID IT! AND I felt like I could keep going! 4 miles! SHUT UP! I seem to have found that sweet spot in which running 'seems' effortless and I can just zone out and keep going...so cool. Listening to an audiobook really helps too, takes my mind off of what I'm doing.

I start Jeff Galloway's 1/2 marathon training program after this weekend. I've signed up for the Carlsbad 1/2 marathon in January. I'm pretty sure I'll end up taking a few walking breaks during the race, which is fine with me. The race time limit is 6 hours, so there's absolutely no rush. I'd like to finish in under 3 hours-ish though...we'll see how that goes.

galewind - Congratulations graduate!!! Kudos to you for sticking with it! So many people quit when they run into snags or have injuries...you stuck with it and now you're done! Woo-hoo!

jayazusa - Congratulations on running 4 miles! Isn't it a great feeling when you finally find that pace in which you feel like you could just keep on going?

4babes - Congrats on completing your first 5k in 33 minutes! I have my first this Saturday and I'm so excited I can't even stand it. My normal 5k time is about 37-38 minutes, so I'm hoping that my race day excitement will knock a few minutes off of that time. If not, I'm still happy to be able to even do it!!!

You should be so proud of your perseverance! I think it is great that you stuck it out thru the weeks where you had to repeat and the weeks of pain. Wait till your first race once you finish it makes all the weeks of struggle feel so good! My first race it was an amazing feeling of accomplishment for me, I read back thru my posts and my journal and can't believe that how I struggled thru the first weeks.

I am doing the Hal Higdon's 1/2 Marathon Prep program I just starting week 3, it is amazing I completed 4 miles Friday and decided rather than walk an additional 1/4 of a mile home I would just jog, it gets easier the more you trust in your abilities and your body. I was also just fitted for a new pair of shoes, I find the correct shoes make a large difference my legs feel better after runs now and my IT band is not nearly as much of a problem.

Great work all,

Jay

So many gave up along the way, but you didn't let those obstacles get in the way. Awesome job! And good timing to lead you up to the race this weekend. Have a blast with it. For me, the race is the icing on the cake. Running in a 5k is the "final exam" for the weeks of training. You get a grade (time) that has meaning only to you, unless of course you're a real racer! Crossing the fininsh line is such a high - enjoy every minute, pace yourself, keep it up. I was going to register for a 5 mile race this weekend then decided not to as I'm starting a running workshop on Saturday morning and I thought it might be too much. But you've motivated me to reconsider. There is also a 2 mile leg that might be just enough - I love the race environment! And they'll be few and far between in a few months.

So while shin splints and other things "threw off my mojo" and got me hurt, the C25K that I started in June was finished today. For week 9 day 3, I went just a little further and I ran 33 mins and did 3.35 miles. I also know I had just a bit more in me, too, which is a great feeling. I know I have a lot to work on still as far as improving time is concerned, but for now I am just doing it for the distance. In June I set a goal to participate in a Race for the Cure in NJ, which happens to be this coming weekend. I'm excited because I know I can do it. Also, since June I have lost over 15 pounds, and I am looking forward to doing more exercising to get into even better shape. As the weather gets colder I know I may not be able to do outdoor running as much, but now that I've lost a bit of weight and feel a little more confident about not being completely out of shape, I think I may be ready to try to go for a gym to get a more full-body workout.

I have to say a huge thanks to the author(s) of the iPhone c25k app, as it REALLY made it easier to do.

Lastly, to all of those still trying to figure out what's going wrong -- remember, even if you have setbacks, continue to push yourself. It took me two weeks to get through week 5, and then after I got new shoes (I overpronate so I ended up buying a pair of Brooks Trance9 Shoes, which I really like to run in) I had to do part of it a 3rd time. I also had to repeat one of the week 7 days once because I wasn't able to cut it. But after I got started on week 8 and got back into the swing of things, it pushed up. But yeah, I'm rambling, so I will leave you with this -- DON'T GIVE UP!!!

As Randy Pausch said "Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want something badly enough. They are there to keep out the +other +people."

Kate - Yes the 2:30 is a conservative goal I do run below 10:00 almost all the time but I will have to see how that holds up over distance. It is amazing to hear that your two children were able to complete it in under 2 hours, Ideally I would be able to complete the HM under 2:00 but I want to see where my training leads me, for Now the goal is to finish and do it under 2:30.

Well I live in Phoenix AZ, winters are mild, kinda funny my running partner go out of her car this morning and said it is cold, it was 75° with a 35% humidity, which is very mild compared to the 85° and 50% humidity of a month ago. In December and January our lows average 44° and Highs Average 67° so cooler buy our standards but not unbearable by any stretch.

Great job on the Hill today, real interesting to see what we can tolerate on any given day. I did a speed workout I did two miles a 8:30 pace and was able to maintain it, tomorrow I plan to do a 3.1 mile run to see if I can maintain below a 9:00 pace while controlling my heart rate and breathing. Friday will be an off day so I can rest before my next 5K would like to finish that with a pace better than 9:16.

Great running all,

Jay

Jay, I love the way you challenge yourself. I suspect the 2:30 finish is a conservative goal. You routinely run way under 10 minutes so this is certainly a nice pace. Two of my children just ran their first Half last weekend (Buckeye Half). My 22 year old daughter's goal was to finish in 2 1/2 - my 27 year old son's goal was 2 hours. Well, little sister kept pace with big brother for a good part of the race and finished in 1:58 - he took off the last leg and finished in 1:56. Both happy campers. My daughter usually runs a 9 minute mile, which I think is about your pace. But this is a long race and who knows how long one can keep up any given pace. You'll do it! Speaking of training, what are winters like in your neck of the woods?

lovelife4, you don't need to run, you run circles already with all the activities!! I remember those days. I didn't watch the evening news until recently because we were always at some game/practice/concert or another, late dinners, library runs, parent groups etc. For 2 years I had kids in 3 different schools (elementary, middle and high) - don't know how I kept it straight but boy o boy was I glad when that was over. I like the idea of your "private" races. You are so self motivated it will work for you. Sets a great example for your kids, too. You just don't get the t-shirt, but I suspect you can work on that!

Today should have been an off day for me but I decided to just go out and run with no expectations. Just run. So I ran for 20 minutes, and at the end I ran UP THE HILL!!! the Huge hill that gets me home. Heart rate way up, but I told myself that I only needed to get to the top and I was done. I swear I could hear my heart swoshing through the Garmin HR monitor! Maybe if I do this on a regular basis that hill will seem cinchy.

Have a great day everyone!

Kate
