Frankly I don't see any issue with the name and if I ever manage to run that distance I sure won't be bothered by it being called a half-marathon.

If anything, this race has the word "marathon" in the name, which takes it to a whole different league than the 5k, 10k, etc.

As has been pointed out, non-runners rarely know the distances anyway, and runners know what an accomplishment the race is.

Just the same as a 100-mile run can still be a called an ultra-marathon, and ultra runners don't seem to have an issue with that, even though the distance is not comparable to a marathon at all.

A half-marathon is exactly what its called - half the distance of a marathon. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't require extra history/ pronounciation lessons.

Pikermi just does not roll off the tongue very easily ... sounds like a Japanese fetish or something ...

1) descriptive and immediately recognizable

2) associate it with marathon, so it ends with -athon.

3) avoid the word half

4) ekohsi is 20 in Greek

Ekathon!

But frankly, I don't see the problem with the existing half nomenclature. Descriptive and easy.

I love Pikermi! Fun history, fun to say, plus I also think the pronounciation is obvious (but would easily be picked up by people who get it wrong at first). I'm going to start using it ASAP!

We could always dredge up some obscure length measure....... like "105 furlongs" or "a thousand chain run" (although that last is short by 48 chains.... about half a mile)

Mabe we should be still calling half-marathon and not be making things being complex like with government. All peoples on the streets know what a half-marathon being. i am thinking less from one percents of peoples know what a pikermi is being.

Is it being so important what you are calling "Half Marathon"? Pikermi is sounding like piker who is being a cheap person. So Pikermi is cheap marathon?

I agree. I like the term: "Thirteen'er" or 13'er. To get it to change, you provide this information to each race director, repeatedly so that they can begin using it, putting it on shirts, etc.
