Welcome! MCM is a great race and this is a great place for resources. I learned 98% of what I know about running here and becoming a runner has been one of the best things I've ever done. Three years ago I was in your shoes- signing up for a marathon and not quite sure what I had gotten myself into or how to really go about doing what I had promised myself I would- and now I'm an ultrarunner, I've raced around the world, and I work with an incredible non-profit where I get to help kids via running! It's been an awesome journey- enjoy the start of yours

Yup - that's my favorite, too! "because 26.3 would be crazy"...that's going to have me giggling all day!

"Why?' indeed.........Last month's favorite shirt said, "Because 26.3 would be crazy." You could try

"I couldn't find a triathlon that day"

"A hundred miler would keep me from trick-or-treating"

"There isn't enough snow for the Birkebeiner"

"My swimmer's ear was acting up"

"Why" was never much of a question at MCM, except in the Crystal City detour

I'm crossing ideas/training from the "Marathon Training for Dummies" book, and the links all over About.com under "Running/Jogging". I used to run about 7 miles every day, just because, until I messed up my knee. I was told I'd never run more than 1 mile at a time "ever again"...so I gave up for a year or so. I began again several weeks ago, got caught up in my first 5K, signed up for the Half in VA Beach in September, and now the MCM in October. It's amusing...when you tell people what you're up to...and they stare back blankly and ask, " why?"...

Ditto here. On one hand I'm excited I can't wait ... on the other I'm scared and realize that I've got a long way to go until I'm ready. Six more months (or so)!
