BCS title is Mizzou's to lose

The University of Missouri football team hasn't been ranked #1 in the nation since 1960, I believe. While home over Thanksgiving, I heard the local news say that St. Louis has 70,000 Mizzou alums--unsurprisingly, more than any other city. I enjoyed the chance to experience the excitement and energy buzzing around town, and I also heard some interesting talk about the BCS and conference championships.

This struck me as the most interesting topic:

Ohio State hasn't played a game in a couple weeks but they have jumped up in rankings three or four slots. Ohio State will also not play in a Big Ten championship game. Mizzou does have to play in a Big 12 championship game. If Mizzou loses they will no longer be eligible to play in the national title game.

With the regular college season ending and Mizzou topping the rankings--does that mean they have won the right to compete in the national championship game? In a way, Mizzou can only lose what they have already earned. Is it unfair that Mizzou has to win an extra game to stay at #1, to validate what they've already done, while Ohio State doesn't play a conference championship game and can sit back and watch teams fall from the top?

I'm wondering what the rest of the country thinks about this situation.
